Teen Wolf renewed and episode order doubled

It's official: 'Teen Wolf' will be back for season three with not 12, but 24 new episodes. Is that cause for celebration or concern?

Well, I guess I did miss something today at Comic-Con after all. In the Teen Wolf panel, it was announced that not only would MTV’s sweetheart be renewed for a third season (unprecedented for a scripted MTV original), but that its episode order would be doubled, from 12 to 24.

The first thing I thought was that they definitely read my review from this week’s episode, in which I mention that they really need to air more than one new show a week. I’m not sure if that’s how they plan to air the extra episodes, or if they’re thinking they could extend the season and compete against new network programming. That would be interesting, but I wouldn’t be concerned. As long as people could find Teen Wolf, they’d watch; it’s rivalling The Vampire Diaries these days.

The most exciting part of this news isn’t the confidence they have in the little-show-that-could, but in imagining what they’re going to do with their elongated season. This presents the opportunity to go deeper, exploring their characters and their motivations more, threshing out the three-dimensionality of the entire cast, even Grandpa Gerard … heck, even the coach! It could also give Teen Wolf an opportunity to completely screw up. They could get muddled in ridiculous, convoluted plots, too many special effects and more bad dialogue. Instead of giving the fans more of what they want, a double-long season could end up being Teen Wolf’s downfall.

What do you think? No question that the renewal is a great idea, but what about 24 episodes of Teen Wolf next season — good move or tragedy waiting to happen?

The press release in its entirety is on page two.
