Burn Notice returns with a bang

When we last saw Michael Weston, he'd been shot by Jesse and was left laying on the pavement after an auto-flipping accident. Did Michael survive this? I think we all know the answer to that, but what happened to Barrett and the bible, and is Jesse a friend or foe?

- Season 4, Episode 13 - "Eyes Open"

Of course, Michael couldn’t stay down long; it was fun to watch him work with a hole in his shoulder. There was quite a bit going on in tonight’s episode. Barrett’s dead; Vaughn’s still around; Scott seeks revenge for the kidnapping of his daughter using a crazy bomber; oh, yeah and … the whole who-burned-Michael story is still being played out. And, we can’t forget Jesse. I’m amazed the show was able to fit all this into an hour-long premiere.

The main case of the week, revolving around serial bomber Dennis Wayne Barfield (great triple serial killer name), had a nice balance of intrigue, suspense, and humor. Three things that make for a fun Burn Notice episode. I didn’t see the murder of Scott coming, which showed the true craziness of Dennis. The triangulation of his phone call to blow up the flat screen was brilliant, as was blowing it up in the pool. Great visual effect.

The Dennis story came to an end with Fiona’s new house blowing up and my favorite line of the night by Jesse, “Sometimes you got to put the rabid dog down.” Jesse definitely isn’t the nice-guy analyst that we first met. That was by far my favorite moment in the whole show: Jesse did what? The reactions by Sam, Fiona, and Michael … whoa. Whether he has become hardened or has just grown up from his time with the team, I like the new Jesse. I’m glad that he is still around and part of the team. Deb and some readers were hoping he would be gone after the finale. Do you wish he was gone?

Notes and Quotes:

  • Between the finale and the premiere, a lot of people were killed. A little surprising that this isn’t bringing more heat down on Michael et al.
  • “You know what? While we’re bribing our way in, you’re my husband” – Fiona
“OK, then. Our marriage is on the rocks” – Jesse
(Loved seeing Fiona and Jesse working together again, especially in the parking garage)
  • “After it’s over don’t even think you’re getting out of this without confessing.” – Michael
“Why would anyone ever confess to anything when there’s a Fifth Amendment?”- Scott
  • The bouquet of roses trick that Michael came up with on the fly — classic Michael Weston.
  • Jeffrey Donovan was frighteningly good at playing Michael as Gordon.

Jesse should stay … he adds a lot … Michael is the BEST but Jesse definitely brings something special to the show …
