Did Gossip Girl really just reveal that secret?

I know it has been a while since anyone at CliqueClack HQ has covered Gossip Girl, but we figured since it was the “extra-special 100^th episode CW event,” we should actually take a look. Plus, between How I Met Your Mother and Castle both being in reruns, and the unfortunate wine-infused live tweet extravaganza of The Bachelor that Jane talked me into, I am in the perfect place to talk about Gossip Girl.

On some levels, it is a good thing that I haven’t been sharing my thoughts about Gossip Girl lately. If I had, I think I would have spent the past season’s worth of episodes beating the proverbial dead horse about how stupid the Louis/Blair storyline is (and you know how we at CliqueClack love to beat a dead horse). If there were ever two people who were not meant to be together, it is these two. I am a Blair/Chuck shipper, tried and true. But I’m not such a sycophant as to think that neither can be in relationships before they find each other. Actually, working your way through myriad boyfriends and girlfriend seems to be the order of the day on Gossip Girl.

But the fact that Blair and Louis actually went through with their wedding actually made my jaw drop (well … I’ll let you decide if the jaw-dropping was metaphorical or not). A marriage isn’t as irrevocable as a pregnancy, but close (though, Gossip Girl did go down that particular road, too, didn’t they?). The show will eventually have to extricate themselves from the sham of a marriage. That Louis dropped his “you better put up a good act” bomb on Blair during their first dance has already put a yet-unannounced end-date to the royal train wreck. The sooner the better, if you ask me. There’s nothing like being married to a cardboard box that really puts a cramp one’s style.

But the really big bomb that Gossip Girl decided to drop on the world is the identity of Gossip Girl. But, seriously … does anyone really think it is Georgina Sparks? I’m sure that over the next couple of days, fans will go back through the previous 99 episodes and provide a great deal of evidence on why she can’t be the real diva of dirty laundry, but that’s not where I’m coming from. No Gossip Girl reveal could ever be satisfactory enough for fans, which is why for a long time I’ve thought they would never bother to attempt a reveal. The real evidence, from my perspective, is the fact that there is such an easy out. Gossip Girl went dark for a long time this season. There’s nothing to say that the current Gossip Girl is the real deal. That’s my bet, at least.

I don’t know if it is because I’ve already seen the first couple episodes of NBC’s new Smash, but there was something about the “Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend” number that felt totally overwrought to me. I’m not saying that there’s not more than enough Marilyn to go around (I’m not really on the pro- or anti-Monroe bandwagon). But it being a musical number, Smash is all I could think of.
