Secret Circle – Faye walks a very dangerous line

Eleven episodes in to The Secret Circle, and I’m not sure who the antagonists are. Is it the parents, whom have killed already in a selfish attempt to regain their power? Or is it Faye and her immature attitude towards magic? I’m not sure I completely trust Jake and his association to the witch hunters, whom actually seem to be doing the right thing in the wrong way. The ever shifting factions of Chance Harbor take a little getting used to, but it certainly is fun to try.

Considering the not-really-there love triangle – that actually might finally be developing — with Cassie, Diana and Adam, the whole extended “sleeping over” thing has got to be a little awkward, no? Though Cassie’s insistence of keeping Diana’s feelings in mind shows that she’s trying to be a good friend – a rarity in a show about high schoolers. Melissa shows the same loyalty to Faye later in the episode.

The adults of Chance Harbor took a big back seat this week, other than Adam’s father Ethan, whom I feel like we haven’t seen in a couple of episodes. Apparently he’s gotten sober in the intervening time. Being more clear-minded didn’t make him any more ready to tell Cassie about her mysterious father. I’m interested in where that particular story is going. Her mother seemed like a pretty good person, her father obviously bad. Which traits did she pick up from each?

I love the continued call back to Faye’s inability to open her locker symbolizing her lack of magical power. It is such a pedestrian thing to do; it speaks to her previous reliance on magic. She’d just recently discovered that power, so its not like she never learned how to open a lock – she’s just forgotten in such a short time period. Faye represents everything that could go wrong with the Circle in general, and Cassie specifically, in a Dark Willow kind of way. As Adam says, it is the first time she’s gone down this path, and I seriously doubt it will be the last. Faye is obviously not as “done” with the circle as she’d like to think. Her relationship with Lee is not exactly healthy for her, but that’s obviously one of the reasons she is so attracted to it and him.

And here I thought that Fire and Ice was just a corny high school dance theme. Leave it Diana to tie the theme back to Robert Frost’s poem. Which, in turn, was really about the ending of her and Adam’s relationship. How positively meta!

• Emo boy and Girl Scout? I guess the writer’s concept of what Adam and Diana actually come across as to viewers isn’t really grounded in reality.
• The Chance Harbor Municipal Records Database has a section for dental records? Now that’s truly scary.
• For a dance where everyone’s supposed to be wearing red and white, there’s a whole lot of not red and white wearing going on.
