Saturday Night Live – Bryan Cranston/Kanye West

Bryan Cranston in skivvies, Rescue Dogs, Morgan Freeman, sparkling apple juice and Kanye surrounded in white. Just another night of 'SNL'!

- Season 36, Episode 2 - "Bryan Cranston/Kanye West"

Cold Open: Rahm Emanuel — There was talk that newcomer Jay Pharoah might take over as the Obama impersonator on SNL this season. Well, now we know that’s not true as long as Armisen is around. Big ol’ MEH on the cold open.

Monologue: Bryan Cranston — Nice to see Cranston keeping with the unshaven head while not filming Breaking Bad. He’s got a point, though: who outside of those watching Breaking Bad or have seen Malcolm in the Middle know who he is?

Peptol Bismol Ice — Holy crap, this is genius! Wait what? It’s not real? Damn.

The Miley Cyrus Show — Best part of this sketch was the few brief moments we saw Cranston as Billy Ray Cyrus. The rest sorta went over my head because I haven’t really seen much of Miley Cyrus before, but I imagine it’s not far from accurate.

What Up With That? — This sketch never fails to surprise me with who they can get for guests. Morgan Freeman and Ernest Borgnine! And, man, 93-year-old Borgnine really looked like he was loving being there — constant ear-to-ear grin. You just knew they’d get Cranston in his tighty-whiteys at some point. And, hey, I loved the rectangular pizza! What up with that?

Shanna –We’ve seen Shanna show up before, and it’s still pretty funny / disgusting. The REALLY long burp got me, because it really seemed to go on longer than Wiig thought it would.

Rescue Dogs — A weirdly put together short, but the ridiculous ads and crap in the 911 app got a big laugh out of me.

Musical Guest: Kanye West — Wow, that first number was one of the more elaborate stage sets I’ve seen on SNL in quite a while. The amount of control Kanye must have had to insist upon to pull that off right must have been crazy.

Weekend Update — A pretty nothing-special Update this week. Thankfully the Cathy bit won’t likely be coming back on again, now that the strip is canceled. So far, at this point, I’m thinking they’re not using Cranston enough.

Kid Smartz — I knew right where this was going when I saw it was a kids game show from the ’70s. Someone once pointed out this ultra-creepy video from a game show host who loved kissing young girls on the show. Warning: really creepy.

The Bjelland Brothers — “I sent a bottle of sparkling apple juice to your house. Did you get it?” Can’t get it out of my head! Please be gone before I head to bed.

Teaching Henry to Fight — I’ve gotta say, Pedrad seems to have quite a knack for playing really nice kids who take getting handed the shit end of the stick with a smile.

i-Sleep Pr0 — Y’know, I bet having “real” noise to help one sleep is probably pretty accurate for a lot of people. Hell, that’s why there’s a heartbeat noise for baby white noise machines!

- Most of these sketches were lousy tonight. Cranston did a great job, but the writing didn’t match his talent. Well except for featuring him in tighty whiteys.
– Good Miley and Depp impressions. The Miley impression was so accurate she was annoying, just like the real one!
– That 1st Kayne West song, Power, has the following lyric in it: “Fuck SNL and the whole cast, Tell ‘em Yeezy said they can kiss my whole ass…” Hmm wonder why he chose to freestyle over that part?

The Bjelland Brothers is the number one favorite at the moment? Really?! Still can’t get over Ernest Borgnine having the time of his life! That was the best part of the night.
