Camera Obscura – Webisode Clack

The month of October means movie makers once again try to scare the bejeezus out of us with their creations, but that's not limited to the big screen or even television.

Here in New England, fall, to me, means Halloween time. No, I’m not some goth, black lipstick wearing weirdo who plans a small animal slaughter on All Hallows Eve. I guess I just like the thrill of being scared of “bumps in the night”-type things. Every year October means the debut of more movies and videos that aim to scare the living shit out of you, and, as it turns out, webisodes are no exception.

Case in point: Camera Obscura, which debuts today on DailyMotion. This is a brand new horror series by writer/director Drew Daywalt, which will be airing new webisodes every weekday throughout the month of October. The first three webisodes post today, and they hold a ton of promise for what’s yet to come.

Camera Obscura follows the granddaughter (Clara, Reagan Dale Neis) of a recently deceased man with a very, very odd and mysterious past. While packing away grandpa’s belongings for storage, Clara and her friend Chad (Timm Sharp) happen upon the old man’s favorite camera, which dates back to the ’30s. Clara ask Chad to see if he can fix the camera up, and what he discovers is where things turn from already strange to right-out freaky.

If you’re easily scared by movies like The Ring, you’re not going to want to watch even a little of these videos … unless you like to be scared by that sort of thing, y’know, like I do. There’s definitely some Japanese horror influences in here, especially with the creature effects and in some of the cinematography. Fans of those kinds of films (i.e., me) will be very happy with at least the first three webisodes of the series — we’re talking hairs on the back of your neck standing up.

The production has very little of that “oh this was made for the web” feel, and the acting by the two leads has been very well done. Lots of little details were really thought out, from the odd scribblings in grampa’s notebook, to whatever the hell is inside that camera.

This is one series I plan to watch through to the end, and a great way for me to kick off Halloween season.
