The seniors on Glee say goodbye

The writers on 'Glee' attempted to pull our hearts out and stomp those suckers flat with the finale episode. Did it work? Oh! And "someone" didn't make it into NYADA.

- Season 3, Episode 22 - "Goodbye"

"Glee" seniors say goodbye

First of all I just need to say that if I were Rachel on Glee, I would have killed Finn for what he did to her in tonight’s finale. I mean, really. She thinks she’s on her way to get married and he takes her to the train station and says goodbye forever? (As far as we know. They’re trusting fate.) I would have needed much more notice and much more luggage.

Rachel took it well, however.  (She cried hysterically, but that’s nothing new for her.) Then she just sang her way onto that train and the streets of New York City and disappeared from view.

It was a rather nifty ending to the season. Of course, we thought she’d be in the Big Apple with Kurt and Finn, but some things just aren’t meant to be.

Let’s wrap it up by discussing what the seniors are doing and where they’re going at this point  . . .

We left Kurt waving farewell to Rachel at the train station after finding out he wasn’t accepted to NYADA. Huh. Well, that sucks. After all, Kurt took a chance on his audition and sang the tune he wanted to sing and went out on a limb and all. And for what? Us to see him let down? Geez. Just because the producers need some of the kids to stay for the ratings not to plummet next season, they break our hearts. (However, how cute was the scene with Kurt and his Dad? I just adore the relationship between those two. I hope it’s educating some of the parents out there who may be having problems “dealing with” a gay son or daughter.)

Santana struggled with whether or not to take the cheerleading scholarship to Kentucky. (They give scholarships for cheerleading? That’s just wrong.) Her Mom (Hi Gloria Estefan!) was at first adamant about her not rushing off to New York and getting an education, but then did a one-eighty and was supportive of the idea.

Big mistake. Mom was right in the first place. New York ain’t going anywhere for the next four years. And about one tenth of the performers who go there actually get work. Better to have the degree in your back pocket just in case. Sigh.

Brittany  . . . was held back. Seriously? A zero point zero grade point average? I mean, I know her charm is in being lovably dumb, but you’d literally have to try to screw up to screw up that badly! And how will she redeem herself in just one year, if we’re supposed to believe she has no grade point? Geez.

They kinda threw the character of Mercedes unceremoniously out the door, considering how much we’ve come to love her. There was a small scene where she told Santana she was off to be a backup singer in California and attend classes part time. And then we barely saw her again. What a shaft!

Quinn has pulled off this amazing recovery after being paralyzed, and had an epiphany to give back to the school in the last days before her graduation. So she turned in her uniform to Sue (who told her to keep it in a very touching scene) and is on her way to Yale.

And it seems her kisses hold sway, because after she laid one on Puck? He passed his geography final and was able to attend the ceremonies and belt out some Springsteen. Excellent.

I think Finn going into the Army was an interesting choice for the writers to take. But I was a might confused. Early on, did he not say the Army wouldn’t take him because of his Dad’s dishonorable discharge? But then he’s going to Fort Benning. I missed something.

But I gotta say, that Finn is the one I’ll miss the most. He’s my Scarecrow. The guy has a heart of gold, he’s very sweet. He’s just the entire package of looks and empathy and strength of character. Letting Rachel go (actually literally making her) after her dreams even though it could very well mean losing her was just a heart wrencher. The scene between Rachel and Finn in the car was their best together in all the seasons of the show. Really well acted by both Cory Monteith and Lea Michele. (And no. I did not cry.)

I hope we haven’t seen the last of Finn. I don’t think we have.

See … I heard a rumor that next season may be a “show within a show.” Half the time at McKinley High with the glee club, and the other half following our alumni.

That might be sorta fabulous.

What do you think?

I’m pretty sure they confirmed that almost all the regulars would be back for next season, so no reason to panic.

Do you think Ryan Murphy is now wishing he’d begun with the kids as freshmen? Personally, it’ll be nice to have less Rachel and that face contortion/pained emoting.
Did you notice how THAT GIRL – Marlo Thomas she appeared when emerging from the train station with the hat on?

The season closer kind of left me feeling flat. …maybe the calls from work robbed me of the experience.

Not really … They made the decision prior to this season what year everyone was in, but that was still at the point where they were secretly planning the spin off. When I talked to Darren Criss, Jenna Ushowitz and Harry Shum Jr. at Comic Con last summer, they didn’t know what year they were in, and wouldn’t find out until they started shooting a couple of weeks later.

Now, if the question was knowing that the spin-off would get cancelled, would they make everyone only be juniors this year, then the answer might change.

What I really want to know is how Brittany passed any other year in school if she got a 0 GPA in her senior year? Even if she did just barely pass by some miracle from Freshman to Junior year (or even last semester), how is it no one in the guidance office actually thought to sit down with her and figure out a plan of action? Oh what am I kidding, this is the school where you can throw iced beverages at people you hate and get away with it.

It’s the same system that got Quinn into Yale, and allowed her such a quick recovery from what became a very half-heartened message.

And keeps Sue in her job even though she verbally and occasionally physically harasses coworkers and students on a regular basis.

Tara: You can’t really take any part of Brittany’s story lines seriously.

But as Robert said, all regular cast members for this season were offered spots for next year, and they all accepted. That does not mean that they will all appear in all of the episodes, though.
