Glee – Featuring the songs of Whitney Houston

'Glee' creator Ryan Murphy announced awhile back that the show would feature a tribute to the late Whitney Houston. Tonight's episode fulfilled that promise. But that begs the question ... would Whitney herself have liked it?

- Season 3, Episode 17 - "Dance with Somebody"

Well, it’s about time. The Glee kids are finally coming to grips with the actuality that in just forty-two (Glee) days, the seniors will be graduating and moving on. Which means things will change forever.

Strangely enough? The death of Whitney Houston is the catalyst for this realization. Mr. Shue notices the kids just can’t seem to say goodbye to her, and equates that with their inability to look at the fact that soon there will be even tougher farewells to say between them.

Nice little tie in, writers. I was cringing from the moment I heard that Ryan Murphy planned an entire “Whitneython” episode, as I’m not a huge fan of said Diva. Sorry. Shoot me. Mea Culpa.

But? Aside from Kurt’s horrifying performance of “I Have Nothing” (which literally woke my cat from a dead sleep on the ottoman at my feet and made her crankily meow) it wasn’t so bad.

I was in it more for the threads in the story line meshing together than the music this time around. I can tell that we’re headed for a real Sobfest come the finale my friends. How? Well. ‘Cause I got just a little teary a couple of times tonight.

Hey! Give me a break! I’ve gotten to know these characters over the past three years, and some of them? I’ll miss. (Not you Rachel.)

Quinn and Joe seem to have an interesting “thing” starting. Joe’s all freaky about his religious principles of abstinence until marriage versus his exceedingly normal teenage guy cravings for Quinn. What a quandary! I like how Quinn supports his beliefs and doesn’t push him. She seems to want to take it slow, daddio. And considering the uncertain future she herself faces, it’s probably not a bad idea for her not to take on much more than learning how to walk again.

Kurt and Blaine hit a rocky patch when Kurt started texting with another guy he met in a music store. And not just normal “How are ya” texts, but flirty ones, which Blaine found in his phone. I felt rather bad for Blaine. He’s right. He changed his life by changing schools for Kurt. This was one of the times I choked up a bit.

We find out that Kurt’s being a bit of a jealous guy because of all of Blaine’s solos in the past several weeks (I wonder if Chris Colfer is pissed about Darren Criss getting much more screen time on Glee in “real life?”) And it all comes out in a rush in Emma’s office that the problem all along has been Blaine’s fear of being alone when Kurt moves to New York. They professed undying love and hugged it out.

Although I hope it works for Blaine and Kurt, I’m telling you right now that as sure as I’m banging on these keys? Next season with Kurt off at NYADA, Blaine is going to start seeing other people. Wait! Just wait a minute all you guys and gals that are calling for my head …

I don’t say this because I don’t believe in true love. I do. And stuff. It’s just that I know Darren Criss is going to become the main focus of Glee next season, as he’s proven himself wicked talented. That means “Blaine” will have to have some romantic business going on to keep us involved.

It’s just Simple Reasoning 101. Sorry. Shoot me. Mea Culpa.

Mr. Shue (Will) went through a bit of drama when he finally admitted to Emma the reason for wanting to push up the date of their wedding. Seems he was concerned his seniors would be too enmeshed in their own new experiences to come back to Lima next Fall to attend. (Um … no they won’t. I mean, besides their incredible bond with him? In “reality” expect a comeback extravaganza with all of them guest starring and blaring tunes at the nuptials.)

So? All in all, a satisfactory episode. I didn’t mind the Whitney. It was a nice tribute.

And I can’t go without telling you about the second time I got a tad weepy. It was the scene between Kurt and his Dad. Their relationship has always been one of my favorites on the show. (I cried like crazy when Burt had his heart attack.) They are a mighty fine example of parental acceptance and loving support that flows both ways.

That’s all I got. What did you think of tonight’s “Whitney-thon?” I think she herself would have loved the showcasing of her legacy, and the way the producers changed up some of the arrangements while remaining true to the original intent.

I can’t believe you didn’t love Kurt singing “I Have Nothing”. It was so heartfelt and meaningful. Besides, it’s the first time Kurt has had a solo since West Side Story auditions!

I loved this whole episode. I am glad they are finally focusing on the emotion of the end being near. Anytime you are in a club/activity with the same people for years in high school, graduation is a major pull on the heart strings.

I just watched the Kurt “I Have Nothing” scene and I agree with you and your cat. His voice is one of my least favorites on the show. I ;one his character, but the voice kills me.

One of the contestants on The Voice did a credible job last night on “I Have Nothing”, which made Kurt’s take on the same song difficult to hear.

Mr. Shue needs to focus more on Emma and less on the kids … or run off with the kids and form a commune somewhere. High school angst is hard enough on teenagers, but their teachers need to get a grip.

What show are you watching that Darren Criss gets more screen time? His Blaine character usually sings a song at the start of the episode and then disappears for the rest of it. This episode and Big Brother are pretty much the only times he’s had anything to do for most of the season.

I’m watching the show Glee. In which Darren Criss has gotten more songs and screen time than Chris Colfer as of late.
Darren did disappear for a few episodes when he was doing “How to Succeed” on Broadway, I’ll give you that.

“wicked talented?”

Have all the Boston based writers here started rubbing off on you? I love it.

Bob, I hear I also say the word “Mahm” (Mom) rather strangely as well. I have quirks …

Tara… are you me? I feel like you just typed everything I said to my husband last night. Well except that I’m a Whitney fan.

Yes, Idomoodu2. I am you. *cue scary music* But wait! I’m only You if “our” husband is cute and semi to very wealthy …

I like Kurt. I don’t like watching him sing — he looks toothless and reminds me of Abominable from Rudolph. I beg for more Artie vocals. Costumer for Amber aka Mercedes needs to be slapped.
My Love Is Your Love was my favorite of the night.
I missed then duet between Quinn and Joe. She needs her adenoids checked. Always sounds snotted up.
