Community – Hearts of Darkness

I will not look at this as a goodbye. I will not look at this as a goodbye. I will keep telling myself this even though this week's episode of 'Community' is a walk down memory lane.

- Season 3, Episode 8 - "Documentary Filmmaking: Redux"

With the news of Community being yanked off the schedule, this week’s episode became extra sad. Abed’s documentary perfectly put into focus what fans love about the show, and what we’re going to miss. While the idea of Troy and Britta together is generally horrifying, I love how they’ve been slowly working on it all season. Similarly, I love how Jeff and Annie’s potential relationship has taken a back-burner, and we’ve concentrated more on the friendships of the folks in the study group.

The Dean, a character whom I always thought was better in small doses, was amazing as the star of the episode. I never would have imagined that a Dean-centric episode would be something I’d actually enjoy, but here we are. Jim Rash was amazing – although Joel McHale certainly gave him a run for his money with his spot-on Dean impression.

However, my favorite part of this episode is also what made me the saddest: all of the callbacks. Not only did they bring back the fact that Greendale has a Luis Guzman statue, but they got the man himself to make an appearance. The E Pluribus Anus flag also makes a return appearance, as does Magnitude, doing a silent “Pop-Pop!” Also, when The Dean goes completely bonkers and strips down, is he wearing the same striped boxer-briefs that Jeff wore when he was playing pool? If so, did the Dean buy the same pair or steal Jeff’s? Either action is plausible. And amazing.

Some of my favorite lines from this episode:

“I’ve chosen you, Greendale’s most coincidentally-diverse (Hispanics not withstanding) study group to star in our commercial!” – The Dean

“As a student of character, I have a feeling that trying to make this commercial may cost the Dean his sanity, and my camera follows the fire, not the smoke. Ever seen Hearts of Darkness? Way better than Apocalypse Now.” – Abed

“The word he’s looking for is ‘sassy.’ He better pray he doesn’t find it.” – Shirley

“You get this wrong one more time; I’m segregating the school.” – The Dean

“I loved this place; I got laid like crazy. That’s before Boogie Nights, too.” – Luis Guzman

“Some flies are too awesome for the wall.” – Abed

I still don’t understand your aversion of Troy/Britta, she doesn’t really have much choice to still fit her char. Jeff been there done that. Abed not damaged just off-center. Pierce too damaged and “too old” and Annie who is just too busy focusing on trying to appear older and Jeff
