Castle does Kick-Ass

A vigilante superhero fighting crime ... wasn't that a movie called Kick-Ass? Tonight, we see the 'Castle' version come to the screen as the Lone Vengeance!

- Season 4, Episode 2 - "Heroes & Villains"

Last week’s Castle premiere ended with the shocking revelation that Kate remembered everything. Well, it wasn’t necessarily shocking that she remembered, but rather the way we found out. Of course, in Castle fashion, we don’t find out anything more about that in this weeks, “Heroes & Villains” … unfortunately. It was business as usual, as if, Beckett was never shot.

Though, things aren’t the same. Captain Montgomery is still dead and Captain Victoria “Call me Sir” Gates is now in charge. She must not have gotten the memo that there are sure to be at least two or three “wrong” suspects per case when Beckett and Castle are involved! Hopefully, she will figure that out quickly or the mayor may stop taking her calls. But, really, how could they be expected to believe there were three Lone Vengeance out there?

I was sucked in to the investigation. Of course, the first few suspects were not the killer; this is Castle. But, when they brought in the author, I really thought he did it … until I didn’t. Castle caught that pretty quickly. And, then Detective Hastings seemed like the perfect candidate … until she didn’t. I was surprised at how much Ann knew about Beckett. I was shocked when Ann through Beckett’s mother’s murder in her face like she did. But, then, she was being accused of murder herself. I wouldn’t mind seeing Ann show up again at some point and work a case with Beckett. They both have suffered a terrible loss and it could be cathartic for them to work together.

Overall, I found this episode to be fun. Castle is one of the few shows that can consistently take a totally out there theme and make it seem realistic. If they could make aliens seem real, a comic book hero is nothing. Plus, it was perfect timing with the Derrick Storm comic book coming out this Wednesday.

In the end, we even got a little Castle-Beckett moment when Castle said, “A writer and his muse solving crime. Just like us.” Kate’s smile was precious.

  • Kate is Electra. Hmm…
  • Castle is the Dark Knight. Hmm … hmm.
  • How nasty was that murder by sword?
  • Ryan channeling Castle, unsuccessfully at first, then with the perfect close … loved it!
  • What was up with Martha’s costumes?
  • Alexis is growing up! Though, I’m getting  a little tired of her good girl wanting to do something Castle won’t like routine every week. Her role on the show is getting a little stale. Don’t get me wrong, I love her and Castle together, but liven it up a bit!
  • Will Beckett have a happy ending with her writer? We can hope, right?

One Response to “Castle does Kick-Ass”

I liked this episode as well, although I thought it might have taken too many turns to finally get the bad guy. Officer Hastings was another interesting person they might want to use as a recurring character on the show (perhaps a detective in training?). The detective going Castle was priceless though. One of those good moments for this show. Next week-cryogenics! Just in time for Halloween.
