Rescue Me season five goes out with a bang

rescue-me-season-five-finale

An excellent season of hilarious, intense and zany episodes concluded in less than satisfying, but more than appropriate fashion. Teddy, who was a nonentity for months, magically reappeared a couple weeks ago. Much to my dismay, he ended up being significant to the Tommy Gavin character arc. Even though I disliked Teddy this go around, I can see why the writers pegged him to play the bad guy (or good guy, depending on how you want to look at it). So, what the hell happened in the Rescue Me finale?

Tommy got shot twice by a very sober, but very bitter Teddy. Someone had to pay for Ellie’s death. Might at well be the asshole who drove the Gavin clan to drink. It was all about karma, according to Teddy. Tommy has been a lying, cheating, selfish bastard for five years. It’s about time he got his comeuppance. And who better to give it to him than the designated hitman: Uncle Teddy.

If you recall at the end of season two, it was Teddy who accepted the responsibility to murder the drunk driver who killed little Connor. It was a totally selfless act and by all accounts, the exact right thing to do, considering the guy was gonna walk. Tommy should have been the one to seek vengeance, but he lacked the courage to go through with it. It would have required him to put himself second. Tommy Gavin can never put anyone above himself.

For a guy who saves lives for a living, he sure as hell has destroyed plenty of others that are close to him. Indifference. That’s Tommy’s problem. He just doesn’t give a shit about anyone. Sheila and Janet laughing at Kelly in disbelief after she told them Tommy “held” her was telling. He doesn’t hold his women. He doesn’t comfort those he cares for. In fact, he avoids emotion altogether, which is the main reason why he’s a raging drunkard.

If you subscribe to the theory that he was turning over a new leaf, then why did he blab to Lou in the middle of a thin-walled firehouse about Kelly’s dead baby? All he had to do was keep his trap shut. Knowing full well that Damien the rat was scurrying about, he still opened his mouth. Then he turned around and blamed Sheila for the whole mess. She may be a raving lunatic, but she was not at fault for Kelly kicking Tommy to the curb.

Teddy gave Tommy what he deserved a long time ago. Watching him bleed to death may seem cruel, I admit. However, is it any less cruel than the cumulative heartache and pain caused by Tommy Gavin? I say no. If a dead son, brother and father, plus two disastrous relationships can’t push him to change his ways, maybe a couple bullets in his shoulder will.

Nah. It’s Tommy Gavin. He’s bulletproof. See you for season six.

Holy crap! Last week, when I mentioned Karma being a bitch, I meant it about the whole Lou/Candy situation. I hadn’t realized Karma was going to rear her ugly face to take the life of Tommy Gavin. What’s that all about? Sure Teddy had his reasons for shooting Tommy, but him being a dick doesn’t deserve that. However, it’s like you said, Scott, “Tommy is bulletproof.” After all, he did survive Sheila drugging him and burning down her new house back in Season 3.

All I can say is WoW I did not see that coming My father is a frieman who also lost a child and has been through a bad marriage amidst other problems, The creators of the show did a hell of a time creating tommys character. And I can understand a lot of his problems. I have been watching the show since episode 1 I have seen characters grow and change but holy shit the main charcter shot and bleeding to death by a family member now that is a hell of a plot.

Well, now it’s Tommy’s turn to come back and haunt his predators. Tommy back as a ghost, or maybe a coma “ghost”, would be something I would enjoy! Is he really that bad? He is always the victim of circumstances! Did he cause Connor’s death…no, isn’t that what is meant by an accident. Shiela and Janet both wanted to “get it” without strings attached. What’s wrong with sharing feelings with your best friend Lou!!! Damien is a vindictive little rat…didn’t Tommy save his ass out of love not just because that’s waht Sheila wante………..wow, I could go on and on…………….

Hey, I love Tommy Gavin. He effing rules. That being said, he brings all his problems on himself. Did he have to start banging both Janet and Sheila? No. He knows Damien is a rat, so why would he open his mouth inside the firehouse? If he could ever get out of his own way, the guy might be able to live a somewhat normal life. But who wants that? He’s better being a dick.

To avoid any confusion. Tommy isn’t dead. He’ll be back for season 6.

Nice – Sheila is not responsible for Kelly kicking him to the curb?? Didn’t Sheila call Janet, not a friend by any means, for the specific purpose of teaming up to get rid of Kelly. I was these women that went to Kelly’s home with the express purpose of revealing that they know about Kelly’s son. Sure, Tommy did not have to tell his prying best friend about this — but does that mean that Sheila and Janet are justified for going on a sabotage mission.

And while we are at it — Tommy drove the Gavin Clan to Drink??? Sure Teddy has no responsibility for having his wife go for a drive – after downing several drinks her. NO this is Tommys fault. Apparently taking responsibility for our own actions is too hard, so why not put the blame on someone else. I guess if someone guns down your kids you would blame the guy at the gun company that designed the weapon.

It’s a TV show. Relax.

Tommy did not “back out” of killing the man who killed Connor. Teddy did it so tommy’s daughters would not be without a father. Yeah tommy is a selfish dick except for when it comes to his kids. But, teddy shooting tommy was an awesome way to end the season. Now onto Sons of Anarchy!

i think teddy was wrong in shooting tommy, i mean ya sure Tommy influenced the others to drink but still, no ones forcing it down there throats. all in all i think it was a great season and cant wait for 6 to come out! (which there will be… go to FX.com for details :D )
