Eureka – Water water everywhere

eureka082109

It was a bit of a rough week in Eureka. For me, “Shower The People” unfortunately had more misses than hits. The potential was there, but nothing seemed to really work. The idea behind the compressible water was good, but the case it was key to wasn’t all that exciting. Billy Campbell made an appearance as Dr. Manlius, which felt like they didn’t have the time to do what was originally intended. Henry struggled with losing Kim 2.0, and that was an awful lot like what we’ve already seen him go through. And we’re back to the Carter and Allison shenanigans, which is working on my last “F Moonlighting” nerve.

Too harsh? Maybe. The episode just didn’t really work for me. Starting with Manlius… Billy Campbell is a pretty big guest star for Eureka, right? But didn’t this feel like a huge chunk of the episode got lost in editing? It was either that, or the whole thing was just poorly conceived from jump street. I’m thinking particularly of that scene at the beginning where he is introduced. Tess is just beside herself. Almost giddy at seeing him again. Clearly this is going to present some form of roadblock for Tess and Carter, right? No. It’s just going to be ignored, and Campbell is just there to refer to Kim as an “it” in contrast to Henry. Weird.

Speaking of Kim, perhaps this was all supposed to offer some kind of closure for Henry, but I feel like we’ve all been down that road already. Henry dealt with it, and didn’t need re-closure. And if it wasn’t that, then what the hell? Why even bother bringing Kim back if this was all that was to come from it. Unrecognized computer created humanoid that data has to be pulled from would work just fine. Someone, perhaps the exceedingly pregnant and emotional Allison, could still question the idea of destroying the body to retrieve the data. With the data being Kim, it only served to re-walk a path that has already been traveled.

Now, Carter and Allison. It’s time to fish or cut bait. The will they or won’t they drama had some bite when Nathan was still in play. There was a real argument for Allison choosing him over Carter. You might not have agreed with the choice, but a case could be made. Now that Nathan is gone, does anyone get why either of them would be so hesitant? That is, other than the ridiculous Moonlighting buffoonery that blames Dave and Maddie getting together for the downfall of the show. It wasn’t Dave and Maddie getting together. It was the fact that every other piece of the show went to hell at around the same time. I can’t get past the idea that Carter and Allison aren’t together because someone has decided they can’t be, not because it makes any sense for the ongoing story. The show would be just fine with Carter and Allison together.

Of course, now they do have a plausible reason, with Tess in the picture. Assuming you ignore that she’s a guest star, and not a series regular, and the fact that Allison is pushing them together one minute while gazing fondly at Carter the next… Absent those quibbles, Tess and Carter are very cute. I enjoy their scenes together, but they always come with the nagging thought that Carter wants to be with Allison. Allison wants to be with Carter. And there is a whole lot of wheel spinning going on here.

So, not my favorite episode. I like the idea of the compressed water and the baby shower was fun. Ultimately though, it’s going down in my book as a mostly forgettable episode that mixed some poor choices with some missed opportunities. Let’s try it again next week and see what happens.

I think the end of the episode proved that Carter likes Tess …

quick question …

my Comcast DVR says that next week’s episode is the season finale … but epguides.com lists three more episodes. I suspect that Comcast is incorrect … but I thought that I’d check with y’all

Unless something drastic has changed, and they haven’t announced it yet, the show should air this Friday, take a week off, and then finish the season on the next two Fridays.

Ultimately, I think Carter does like Tess but he yearns for Allison. As for Henry and Kim, did he ever achieve closure? He dealt with the person that sabotaged the lab but I didn’t see that as closure. I thought this gave the character a chance to say goodbye.

Sorry, Brett. Can’t agree with you on this one. I enjoyed the episode. Tess was showing her school girl crush on Manlius. Most of us have had them. The smart handsome teacher or mentor that you kind of feel gaga over.

Didn’t mind the Kim stuff, as it was quick and relatively painless. And Henry did get closure. Now he can move on.

As for Allison and Carter, I’ve never wanted them together. Maybe for a very short while at the beginning of the series, but I’d have to say my desire for them ended quickly. They are too different. I always feel she is looking down on him and, frankly, I just want more for him than that. He and Tess have a real chemistry on screen, they enjoy each others company and they don’t find excuses not to be together. My hope is she’s a series regular by next year.

Allison chose Nathan over Carter. She compounded that by keeping their dream project from Carter, imperiling Eureka’s security (and several people ended up dying, IIRC). Carter was just beginning to be on friendly terms with Nathan when he died, and Allison is still carrying Nathan’s baby.

With all that baggage, I don’t see the two of them getting together any time soon. They’ll have to rebuild their closeness slowly, as we saw this week. And I think that Allison, still torn between the two men and knowing that her indecision is hurting Carter and preventing him from moving forward, knows that the right thing to do is to step aside and let him be with Tess right now.

I liked the epi but it would have been a more better twist if the computer came back as Henry. It would have been great if it came back as Nathan.

Did Kevin die or disappear? You would think that even if he weren’t on screen someone would ask Allison about him and how he is coping with losing Nathan as well as the pregnancy. He is still her kid right?

Water is not a compressible fluid even in Eureka. This was a bad premise for the show.

I agree…I thought Billy Campbell was underutilized in this epi. I thought they would play up the whole teacher/student crush with Tess, but they didn’t…then they have Tess come in contact with the synthetic water and put her in a life or death situation to draw sympathy for her. I would have to say that the parts where she was weak and dying have been her most likable scenes this season…the rest of the time, she has for the most part, gotten on my nerves. I am all about Carter & Allison…their relationship has been one of the things I’ve loved about this show over the past 3 seasons, and have always wanted more of them together. I totally agree that a Carter/Allison relationship could work on the show and posted that same sentiment on another board. Their relationship could work just as well as Carter with someone else. If they were going to put him with someone to shake things up with Allison, they should have brought back the dry cleaner lady, b/c I thought she and Carter had good chemistry, and she was a more likable character than Tess. If the relationship b/w Carter & Tess works out, it will be b/c the producers/writers want it to, and therefore, make their scenes/dialogue interesting and heartwarming. They could do the same with Carter & Allison if they wanted to. The key to keeping Carter & Allison’s relationship fresh is to keep them coy w/one another and separate the private from the professional…good writers can do this & I thing Eureka has them.

err…I ‘think’ Eureka has them. : )

Question: How many times did they say that Kim “is” the data? Did they recover the data? Have we really seen the last of bio-comp Kim?

It’s too soon after Nathan to get Jack and Alison together. I think the writers want to avoid making him the rebound guy. It would do nothing but give people a bad taste in their mouths. Tess could be there to force Alison to reevaluate her feelings much sooner than would be natural, and allow the audience to believe it.

And yes, I’ve been wondering where Kevin went too. (And LoJack, the dog – I’m guessing he’ll be back with Taggart.)
