There aren’t a lot of shows on TV these days that are just pure fun for every second you’re watching. How I Met Your Mother comes close, and I think Glee and Modern Family might make the list this fall. Right now, though, we’ve got Psych — let’s celebrate!

1. James Brolin as the sheriff was charming and hokey all at the same time. It’s always good to see him in any capacity other than Mr. Streisand.

2. Jim Beaver — OK, so he wasn’t Bobby Singer, but any Jim Beaver is good Jim Beaver. That almost sounds dirty….

3. The long version of the theme song — I’m hoping they don’t do that every week and I’ve just been fast-forwarding through it.

4. The title of the episode, “High Noon-ish,” just tickles me.

jon ham 30 rock

We’ve got your standard 30 Rock/ Office block, but tonight on the menu you also have your choice of the Royal Pains pilot or a Burn Notice marathon! It’s almost like TV is good right now, right? Just squint your eyes and you can see it, I swear.

  • USA is airing a Burn Notice marathon all day today. It’s going on now! Turn and watch! Go go go!
  • At 8:00, you can relive the episode of Bones in which Booth is suspected of murdering a rival ice hockey player with whom he has previously had a beef.
  • NBC is playing The Office and 30 Rock all night, but in the 9:00 hour, there are great episodes of both. The Office is airing “The Duel,” in which Andy finds out about Angela and Dwight, and 30 Rock is airing “St. Valentine’s Day,” with the ever-dreamy Jon Hamm.
  • After you’re finished watching Burn Notice, you can catch the pilot of Royal Pains on USA, in case you missed it the first time around.

silk stalkingsSilk Stalkings takes me back to a time in my life where escapism TV ruled my world. I had just graduated from college — a place that I had immense fun every moment of every day — with a double major in Art History and English. A complete blast at the time, but pretty useless unless you want to be a chiropractic assistant. Don’t ask.

Anyway, I got a television for graduation and late at night, that’s what I did. Donna Reed and Mary Tyler Moore were role models for the wife and mother I’d someday become (thank you, Nick at Nite), but Rita, oh Rita Lee Lance led the life of excitement and danger that I craved, with a hunky partner (my first crush of many on Rob Estes’s characters) Christopher Lorenzo.

Then there was the sex. I think Silk Stalkings was the most riskee TV show I’d ever seen. Maybe I led a sheltered life, but c’mon, I was watching The Donna Reed Show for crying out loud, work with me. Sex, drugs, danger; I found Silk Stalkings to be dark and suspenseful, but the partners and their bosses (all three were great!) had so much spark and chemistry (banter, if you will) that it was light enough to be entertaining.

ScrubsI am a creature of habit. I live my life by a schedule and I love it. I’m that type of person that likes a clear cut plan, knowing where I am going to be and when I am going to be there.

For most parts of my life this works just fine, but there is one thing that seems to be in a rut: my TV watching schedule. You see, I tend to watch repeats of Scrubs on Comedy Central from 7 to 8 every weeknight. This may not seem like such a big deal, and in the scheme of things it’s really not, but keep in mind that I’ve been doing this for more than a couple years now. Think about that for a minute. I think I’ve seen every single episode of Scrubs at least four or five times, save for the most recent season or two.

burn-notice-214

Season 2 of Burn Notice is quickly coming to a conclusion. Only two installments remain. Many unanswered questions are still left to ponder, but we finally got a look at who tried to kill Mikey. It was bad-ass Victor (Michael Shanks), from the episode “Bad Blood.” After eluding our burned hero in a storage facility foot chase, the spry assassin chastised Mike for not being in shape. What a guy, eh? First he tries to snipe Mike, then he insults his fitness level. Is it just me, or do these spies seem extra witty?

Whether or not Mike will catch up with this familiar foe is for another time. Like Lost, this show has a tendency to leave its viewers scratching their heads after every episode. This is far from a complaint, just an observation. The main storyline last night dealt with a Haitian man seeking vengeance against the nutcase who killed his daughter. It was well-meaning, but I found it a little dry. I’d rather focus on a moment Michael shared with his mom, Madeline, regarding his father.

Jonathan Silverman is uniquely qualified to appear on Psych as either a guest star, or an off the wall reference. He’s a funny guy, which covers the first bit. And his acting resume includes things like the short lived The Single Guy, Weekend At Bernie’s, and Gimme A Break, which are all right in the Shawn and Gus reference wheelhouse. He was particularly well cast as Lyin’ Ryan, bringing just the right amount of crazy to the role, and more importantly, turning the tables on Shawn. Read the rest of this entry »

It was a return to more light-hearted fare for the latest chapter of Burn Notice. Not that this show ever gets too serious, but recent episodes have tread darker territory as Michael searches for a bomber who may have ties to the person responsible for burning him. Well, Michael found his bomber and all the guy could offer was a bank account number. More questions than answers. Such is life on Burn Notice.

Following the endless trail of bread crumbs is becoming a wee bit tiresome for me. Thanks to clever, amusing writers there are always other things to like in every episode. I rather enjoyed the “everyone wants to be a spy” theme of last night’s affairs. Besides the usual suspects, like Mike, two other characters try their hand at the spy game. Hey, if everyone’s doing it, it must be cool.
