Eli Stone, RIP
I realize this isn’t the timeliest of topics. Long story short, my TiVo worked its magic on the first two episodes of Eli Stone’s second season; it recorded them in full, and self-deleted them upon completion. Before you recommend to me how to solve the problem, yes, it was set to save all episodes, and yes, it was set to delete only when I manually deleted. It’s a problem I’ve had with my TiVo box since the beginning, and one of the major reasons I dislike DirecTV; their DVR boxes suck. They often don’t automatically update their software, so if your version is outdated, you’ll encounter countless recording problems until you manually update. Real high quality.
Anyway, my wife and I also missed the ball on the tiny window ABC provides for viewing their shows online, so we decided to gamble by waiting for the re-runs to air. In the meantime, we dutifully recorded episodes three through nine.
Well, this past weekend I came to grips with reality: Eli Stone is gone, never to return. Of course, I knew it’d been canceled, but in my heart-of-hearts I held out hope that ABC might see the error in its ways. I mean, my God, shows like (I’m hiding underneath the table here) According to Jim, America’s Funniest Home Videos, The Bachelor, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Supernanny, Ugly Betty and Wife Swap have all been given longer lives than Eli Stone. Leaves me speechless, too. Read the rest of this entry »
Ratings Clack – Eli Stone vs Aqui y Ahora? It’s a draw.

(12/30 – 1/04)
Christmas and New Years are now in the rearview, so we can finally start getting back to something that passes for a regular television viewing schedule. If someone could just make this damn snow stop, I’d be a happy guy. Before we rejoin some of our favorite shows for the beginning of 2009 though, we’ve got one more really slow week to talk about. The hits were few and far between, but there were a couple interesting bits hidden away in there.
Eli Stone – Eli messes up four relationships
(Season 2, Episode 9 – “Two Ministers”)
Oh, it was a banner week for our Eli. A banner week indeed. On the plus side, he did get to help a transgender minister try and get his flock back. That was the official “case of the week.” And while it was good, and gave us some more depth into the great evolving character of Keith Bennett, it was the ongoing drama between all the other characters that really drove the story.
It is starting to feel like we’re going to get some satisfying resolution to all these plotlines, as promised. And with each passing episode it’s getting more and more disappointing to think that it’s all coming to an end so soon. They’re all getting so well-rounded and interesting. I even like Taylor again. But no Jordan at all tonight rings up a big New Year’s “Boo!” from me.
Ratings Clack – CSI scores big. Biggest Loser NBC’s best hope?

(12/7 – 12/13)
I work with a guy that has the barest of the bare bones cable packages. Thirteen channels. It amounts to the networks, Discovery, PBS, and shopping. It was a tough week of television for him. There were a lot of repeats. The CW only managed 3½ hours of original programming for the week, for example. Add in a host of Christmas specials and the pickings were a little thin. Taking advantage of all of that, CBS had great numbers for the introduction of Laurence Fishburne on CSI. Some of the other shows that did manage to air originals were not so lucky.
Eli Stone – Pregnant dudes, addicted daughters, some Beatles and Seal
(Season 2, Episode 7 – “Help!”) ![]()
If you needed to chose one word that could describe this protracted season of Eli Stone it would be ‘change’. Since the first minute of the first hour of the second season, the lives of all of the show’s major players have changed in so many ways. Whether it be a move to a law firm, a promotion, or a relationship change, everyone’s lives have been affected.
This week the Change Fairy struck Patti on the head and continued to pound on Matt Dowd as he continued his transformation from suave, arrogant attorney to a slobbering love puppy. It also continued to tap on Jordan as his evolution continued. Come, let us journey to the world of Eli Stone to see what happened in the lives of these fine folks.
Ratings Clack – Everybody loves a Christmas special, and Van Pelt

(Ratings Clack 11/30 – 12/6)
It was an interesting week for TV numbers. With Tom & Samantha packing up the ballroom, there were viewers to be had on Monday and Tuesday. That meant there were winners (Chuck, The Mentalist), and losers (Samantha Who?, Heroes).
The other big story was just how well all of the Christmas programming did. Shrek, The Grinch, Santa Claus, and Rudolph all had nice showings, as did the Christmas in Rockefeller. We also saw the return of Jericho to the airwaves. If you were holding out hope that this could revive the series, well… nuts.
