Quotation Marks – Ascots, belly buttons, and Crocs

This week’s column is a tribute to the new sitcoms network television has given us this season. Sure, we’ve still got some hour-longs in there (because you know I’m not going to let one of these posts go up with out some Glee love), but we’re mainly highlighting the the half hour comedies this time around.
Modern Family
“Why is she dressed like the Hamburglar?” — Mitchell, about his baby Lily
“I’ll tell you what’s weird. Our son is not weird. What’s weird is that her kid wears aftershave and dresses like a count.” — Claire, about Manny
“It’s not just the game. It’s the bands, and the drama and the pageantry.” — Mitchell
“Don’t forget about the team mascots.” — Cameron
“They wear ascots?” — Mitchell
“No, mascots, with an ‘m.’ That could have been very embarrassing.” — Cameron
“Claire likes to say you can be part of the problem or part of the solution. I happen to believe that you can be both.” — Phil

How Thursday night made me a crybaby

I’m still thinking about Thursday night’s TV. Partially because it took me until yesterday to finish watching all of it, and partially because it made me cry. Twice.
For the sake of full disclosure I should admit that it’s around that time of the month where I’m feeling a little more weepy than usual. (Other things that have recently made me cry: a poem, watching Dan in Real Life, watching America’s Sweethearts.) I mean, I’m not exactly bursting into tears left and right, I’m just… pre-disposed. And Thursday night’s television took that pre-disposition pony and rode it all around the park until I was sitting on my couch, swiping my eyes and going, “What the hell just happened?”
And why was it so awesome?
Arrested Development keeps playing games with my heart
Since The Curious Case of Benjamin Button got made, it was inevitable that a new movie would take its place in the “will-it-won’t-it” category of perpetual confusion. And taking Benjamin’s place? Arrested Development.
Today news was released that a screenplay is in the works, but, the article notes, that doesn’t mean we should expect anything, since none of the actors have signed on.
Maybe it’s shows like Community that have me longing for more Arrested Development. After all Community also features the younger, socially-incapable guy (Abed) and the older, trying-to-be-cool guy (Pierce). There was a beauty pageant plot on Parks and Recreation, which bore some strong resemblance to the episode where Maeby wins an inner beauty pageant and George Michael decides to join the army after Steve Holt and his dad compete in a triathlon together. That whole storyline with Andy questioning his sexuality on The Office made me miss Tobias more than I think anyone ever should.
The Office – Requests, worker’s comp, and wedding headaches (Liveblog/chat)

It’s Thursday! Which means, of course, that it’s the most important day of the week, because there’s a new Office tonight, and things are due to start heating up. They already have on the interwebs, with Entertainment Weekly featuring Jenna Fischer and John Krasinski (sigh!) on their cover this week, in preparation for the hour-long upcoming wedding special in two weeks. (Spoiler alert! It’s super-adorable, as is the brief video interview they posted on their site.)
What crazy shenanigans are sure to ensue tonight? Check in with us at 9:00pm EST while we liveblog it all.
The Office “Gossip” and the one true rumor – CliqueClack Preview

When last we left The Office, it was pretty obvious that Pam and Jim were expecting. Sorry if that’s a spoiler to you, but even without saying so, I think most of us knew what the silent celebration between Jim and Pam was about. So, how does the sixth season start out?
We got a look at The Office’s season six premiere, and the formula is still there, the people are still there and the funny is still there … for the most part. I’ll try not to get too spoilery here, but if you’re a major spoiler-phobe, you might want to tread on carefully in this post.
Daily Rerun Roundup – Apologies in advance

Tonight’s such a dog (both in re-runs and not), that I really had to scrounge for you. Here’s what we got:
- First the goods — HBO2 is airing the past three episodes of Entourage at 8:30. TiVo them while you watch live, and re-watch them again at 10:00, because it’s not getting any better than that.
- Of the four majors, only CBS seems to be airing a repeat tonight (NCIS at 8:00). Too bad that’s not a good thing.
- If two (or three) is better than one, The CW has back-to-back episodes of 90210, while USA Network has three of Law & Order: SVU. Even ION is in on the game, with three repeats of Boston Legal, starting at 8:00…. Hey, that’s an option!
- NBA is airing, get this, something called “Top 20 Games of 2008-2009,” where they give us an hour of highlights per game. Talk about stale offerings.
- Not to be outdone, BIO has it’s ode to Mr. “T” at 8:00, and then “Truth Behind the Sitcom Scandals.” THESE ARE REPEATS, I kid you not.
- You could catch the un-funny stylings of Comedy Central at 8:00, with the 19 millionth replaying of last night’s Daily Show and Colbert Report. You know, for the “news.” But why would you?
- For your money (because I wouldn’t put mine on a night like tonight) I’d go with TBS. Four episodes of Family Guy, followed by two of The Office — “Dwight’s Speech,” and “Take Your Daughter to Work Day.” I love the part in the latter episode that’s on the DVD deleted scenes, where Stanley yells at Ryan for flirting with his teenage daughter. “Have you lost your damn mind?” Yes, Stanley, yes he has.
