What I want to see in Heroes season 4

Bob Degon on September 8th, 2009 2:00 PM

Heroes

Honestly, at this point I’m not sure why I’m even going to be giving season four of Heroes a chance. I’ve been a bit frustrated with the show since it’s stellar first season. Season two saw a big drop off in quality from the first, in my opinion. Then, show runner Tim Kring promised the viewers that season three was going to fix all the mistakes of season two. It didn’t.

Frankly, at this point I almost feel like I’m picking on the biggest nerd in school. Heroes turned into the popular target of ridicule and second guessing last season, and I’m not trying to pile it on with this post. Instead, I want to put out some ideas and hopes for season four, to get the show back to what all us fans know it has the potential to be.

The lyrics of the Dead seem to be the best way describe season three, because … man … that was one circuitous route we just took to get to that finale. After a host of side trips, it all ultimately came down to a showdown with Sylar. Last week, I made the comment that the Heroes writers had decided to put all their eggs in the big finale basket. That wasn’t entirely correct. They decided to put them all in the back end of that big finale basket. The result was an exciting finish to the season that did bring (most) things to a close, and managed to set the stage for the next chapter, but suffered more than a few missteps along the way. In that respect, it was rather fitting as the season three finale. Read the rest of this entry »

For those of you who join us for our live Heroes chats or just read the transcripts afterward, you know that I’ve been running really hot and cold on Heroes. This show wanders worse than any series since the last few seasons of Alias, and it can be infuriating. Heroes is not unlike a hyperactive child that I just want to grab by the shoulders, sit down and just say, “shhhh.”

Ever since Bryan Fuller returned though, Heroes has been on an upswing. Although there are still plenty of moments where you just go, “wait… what?” they’re becoming fewer and farther between. Fuller’s influence has made Heroes much more linear, and for that, I am grateful.

This week, Keith, our fearless leader, sent me the rough cut of the finale, called “The Invisible Thread.” I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect, because Heroes has obviously let me down before, but I was pleasantly surprised– it’s fast-paced and full of surprises. Overall, it’s really good. I’ve promised that I won’t spoil it, so I’ve chosen five of my favorite things about the episode that don’t give too much away about what you’ll see Monday night. However, if you’re the type of person who thinks talking about what has already aired in promos is spoilery, then you won’t want to continue reading.

This actually looks like a pretty big episode. Sylar finally finishes his Brotherhood of the Traveling Psychopaths roadtrip across America and finds his father, while Claire is dealing with a very creepy David H. Lawrence chilling in her kitchen and eating some popcorn. Plus, there’s something else. What is it? Hmm… Oh yeah. Matt has a BOMB strapped to his CHEST. So I’m guessing we’ll be finding out something about that.

Heroes chat is back! Sorry about the unexpected absence, but I had to move a few states away on very short notice (now those coppers will never find me, see…), so I’ve spent the past two weeks surrounded by boxes and contemplating suicide. But now everything’s okay! And we’ve got a new episode of Heroes!

Daphne is totally being held hostage, so Matt and Peter, who are not nearly as My Two Dads awesome as Matt and Suresh were, set out to save her. Also, Sylar’s still trying to find his bird-watching child-selling daddy, and has new memories about his surely effed up childhood.

Check back at 9pm for the live-blog/chat!

The kids over at Heroes had a pretty rough go of it with the first half of their season. Ratings were down, complaints were up, and it seemed much of the shine was off of the show. Ah, but not to worry. Tim Kring sent word that everything was going to be just ducky with this new chapter, “Fugitives.” We’re a few episodes in now, and it’s as good a time as any to talk about where this latest installment has hit, and missed, the mark. heroes-nbcIvey’s back Guest-clacking for us again….

Let me first say that I do not believe that Daphne is dead. At least, I think she’s Heroes dead (still alive) and not Lost dead (not alive, but we’ll see them again). I refuse to believe that the first somewhat interesting new character I’ve managed to care for on this show since, well, Elle (and, honestly, Eve before her) has been gunned down for no real reason. That, and I saw an image of her in my BBQ sandwich today, so I know she’s safe.

But, since they keep killing the people I like, I figured we’d play a little game of spin the bottle. Not the version where we manage to get Mohinder and Peter to hook up (Because honestly, they’re meant for each other), but the one where we get to pronounce to the world who we THINK should buck the kicket.
