Quick thoughts on sitcoms – CliqueClack behind the scenes

Thought you had enough of behind the scenes at CliqueClack, after reading our diatribes on Reaper’s fate and the top 100 sci-fi shows, didn’t you? Well, maybe in another life you’ll be so lucky, but today you get graced with another installment. This time, Julia started it, innocently enough.
C’mon, read it. It’s actually pretty relevant considering all of the new sitcoms the networks are trying this season.
JULIA: Any Arrested Development virgins around here? Because if I were, I would offer to do a Diary, but I am pathetically, helplessly in love with this show. But I’m just suggesting, it’s worth getting into. And I will happily aid and abet anyone interested in getting addicted.
BOB: Funniest show to ever be on TV.

Curb Your Enthusiasm – If you’re a huge Seinfeld fan, Larry will call you on your birthday!

My impatience with waiting for the Seinfeld reunion on Curb Your Enthusiasm led me to take advantage of my screener last week. Alas, no luck on episode two (and a scratch on episode three, entitled “The Reunion,” cut my viewing short at minute two!).
However, you’ll be happy to know that I took what some of you said last time to heart: while I still don’t like him, I found myself laughing at (the good “at”) Larry David, and a number of the gags, on this episode. On the flip-side, the title of the episode is “Vehicular Fellatio,” so as expected, it was a little over-the-top. Okay … but I did say some of it made me laugh; so I get credit, right? Curb Your Enthusiasm season 7 – He’s baaaaack!
I’ve never seen Curb. Well, that’s not entirely true: I saw ten minutes of the season six premiere, “Meet the Blacks,” when it aired the other night. Why? I’m not a Larry David fan (despite my love for Seinfeld), and David looks like an old boss of mine. A nice guy, but still. Oh, and David made Ari yell at Drama on Entourage, which, while always funny, was undeserved. That time.
So, what the hell am I doing, right? How can I talk about this show — in which David stars as a fictionalized, albeit still very neurotic, version of himself — if I don’t know anything about it? I’ll tell you exactly where my mind is on this one: the Seinfeld four have a major arc on the coming season of Curb, and I plan on being there to watch.
Here, however, is where not knowing much about Curb comes into play — it will make it very interesting to theorize on what, if any, overarching theme the four will address. If they’re coming in as fictionalized versions of themselves, they might as well be the un-caring group they were on Seinfeld, playing parts about, well, nothing. Or they could be a totally different ball of wax. What will they be up to? Let’s start speculating. Read the rest of this entry »
Seinfeld – CliqueClack Flashback

I had a friend growing up who was completely enamored with Seinfeld. He was one of those guys who drank in everything that their older brother had to offer, and so he picked up on the show, one that wasn’t really meant for those of us in junior high. Yet, even with his constant chatter about Seinfeld, his random quoting from Seinlanguage, even his dressing up as Kramer when the occasion called for it, I wasn’t interested.
In fact, none of us were. Sure, we all watched the series finale of the acclaimed sitcom, but that was just because it was something that you did. People talk about the unprecedented audience for the M*A*S*H finale, but part of that unbelievable number lay in the fact that that’s what you did: you watched the swan song of a legend. Of course, with no frame of reference for the series, I was left with a rather unsatisfied feeling when Seinfeld drew to a close. But, the show was over, and would surely drift into the night.
A few years later, as a college freshman, I knew a guy who was very into the whole Internet thingy. He would scour the web, capturing and burning all manner of shows that both were, and weren’t, on the air anymore. With nothing to keep me occupied during my time in college, I started to borrow random CDs from him, catching myself up on hundreds of hours of television that I’d never before seen. Among those discoveries? Seinfeld. And that’s where the love affair began. Read the rest of this entry »
Webisode Clack – Red vs Blue, a classic and a question

I’ve been obsessed with the Women’s College World Series for the last week, which has put me a bit behind on my web TV viewing. So, this week I thought we’d jump in the wayback machine and take a look at the first web series that I got hooked on, Red vs Blue. I headed off in search of some video to embed, and that’s where the question part of the post came in. Have you spent any money on web TV? And if not, is that a dealbreaker? Or, what would it take to knock the lock off the wallet? Read the rest of this entry »

Television is the balm
I love my TiVo; I’m not ashamed to admit it. The creation of the digital video recorder has been a godsend to those of us who still confess that we love watching TV. 100 hours of memory, the ability to tape two shows at once, a searchable two-week guide, season passes … TiVo has leveled the playing field, and then some.
At the same time, our friend TiVo has us trapped. 100 hours! It seems like a lot, but we all know what its like trying to watch a backlog of even half that, as new shows are added to the total every night. It’s an uphill battle each and every day, because who knows when circumstance will force you and TiVo to be apart for an extended period of time. It’s like gambling: you can never seem to get ahead.
And, fully realizing that this is a nice problem to have, I often find myself frustrated at the fact that watching TV these days seems like work. My wife and I have to constantly press ahead just to clear some space on the box. Often we spend four straight hours watching our favorite shows without experiencing any pleasure. It can be rather disappointing. Read the rest of this entry »
