The X-Files - "Jose Chung's 'From Outer Space'"(Season 3, Episodes 17-20)

These episodes were almost more fun than they had any right to be. No mythology and I didn’t care a whit. Instead, I got to see a lighter side of The X-Files with an incredibly playful storytelling technique.

The Pusher is one of the best characters they’ve come up with. Even though I never watched the series, I had friends who did, and sometimes I’d be at their house when it was on, though I was usually reading, writing or otherwise occupied. And yet, somehow, segments from “Pusher” stuck with me through the years. Read the rest of this entry »

Felicia Day, and the cast of The Guild

In the world of webseries, success and popularity can be hard to find. Sure, a webseries may have a certain following, but its success may not go any farther than those dedicated fans. That’s great for the folks who write, cast, direct, and produce the series. Yet, deep down, I’m sure they’re looking for a status bump that will propel their hard work to a new, and more diverse, audience.

That’s why The Guild is a rarity in today’s ever growing world of webisodes. With a cast of honed, comedic actors, as well as corporate sponsorship, the show has surpassed expectations and become one of the most popular series on the web. With the start of their third season (which began with an August 25th release on Xbox Live, and continues on September 1 on MSN and Zune), a new music video, and the addition of Wil Wheaton to the cast, The Guild continues to grow. So, the obvious question is: why is The Guild so big? Read the rest of this entry »

Buffy the Vampire Slayer- Doppelgangland(Season 3, Episodes 15-18)

It looks like the fallout of Faith’s murder of Finch is going to be dire indeed. I’m loving the complexity of her character, especially as we hold her up for comparison to Buffy. Despite her bravado, you can’t help but feel there has to be a confused young girl in there, somewhere … right?

They still don’t quite seem to know what to do with Oz. He never goes on the adventures with the gang, and he mostly sits and stares. I do enjoy that they get into the fact that he rarely talks or shows expression. It’s an interesting facet to his character, but he’s still majorly underutilized. Read the rest of this entry »

Eureka – Water water everywhere

Brett Love on August 22nd, 2009 12:00 PM

eureka082109

It was a bit of a rough week in Eureka. For me, “Shower The People” unfortunately had more misses than hits. The potential was there, but nothing seemed to really work. The idea behind the compressible water was good, but the case it was key to wasn’t all that exciting. Billy Campbell made an appearance as Dr. Manlius, which felt like they didn’t have the time to do what was originally intended. Henry struggled with losing Kim 2.0, and that was an awful lot like what we’ve already seen him go through. And we’re back to the Carter and Allison shenanigans, which is working on my last “F Moonlighting” nerve.

friday night lights 0308

Sebastian’s back Guest-clacking about Friday Night Lights again, after his commentary on Life last week.

You didn’t have to be a mindreader to foresee Jason Street’s possible patch in the near future. In last week’s episode, there was a scene where he met some former player of the Dillon Panthers who made it to the NFL with his new agent he just signed with, who gave Six his card and told him that if he should ever get to New York, he should pay him a visit. The title of today’s episode, “New York, New York,” said it all. And just like in Mexico before, Jason could count on his childhood friend Riggins to come with him and help him over possible speedbumps. The outcome was to be expected.

30 RockOh man, this was a brilliant episode. I thought it was one of the better installments of the season, if not the best episode yet. How can you not love an episode based on Harry and the Hendersons? Especially when it includes an awesome cameo from John Lithgow? What a good sport. Between looking for the Sci Fi Channel, poking fun at the fact that he was in Harry and the Hendersons, and then yelling “I’m a celebrity” as Jack slams the door in his face, he really milked that cameo for all it was worth.

That was only a small portion of the episode, though.

nicki-grantOne of the more minor-seeming storylines on Big Love actually has the most potential to be an explosive plot. It occurred to me, though, that viewers who don’t have intimate knowledge of Mormon history, particularly from the past 20 years, may not realize how important that story is.

It’s hard to write this without seeming to malign the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS). The LDS Church has a history of buying historical documents that show its history in a somewhat unflattering light. Ostensibly, the Church wants to obtain documents relevant to its history for its archives. However, another reason that has been put forth is that the Church has secrets it wants to hide. These documents are not available for public perusal. Read the rest of this entry »
