A preview of ABC’s new V – The Visitors have returned

I’m not really old enough to remember much about the original V stories. Despite that fact, I’ve been told that, as a kid, I was rather addicted to the mini-series and the show. I was a sci-fi geek before I knew what being a sci-fi geek was. Since I first heard that they might do a remake, I’ve been looking forward to seeing the story played out in a more contemporary setting. I recently had the opportunity to preview the first episode, and I’m really excited about where the show can go.
Diary of a Firefly Virgin – Face tattoos will never not be hilarious

(Season 1, Episode 2)
Diversity! That’s a thing, right? While I’m enjoying the Eastern/Western cultural fusion … Where are all the Asian people? I just read that Kaylee was originally written as an Asian character but obviously that has changed. There were some Asian extras wandering around in the dust in the Pilot and, you know, that’s about it. I’m not desperate for some Asian representation in all television shows, but it’s just strange to see a program with strong Chinese/American influences in everything but the main cast.
Burn Notice – Sci-fi alumni convene
It was a cavalcade of guest stars on the second to last episode of Burn Notice’s second season. We learned Michael had a fiancĂ©. Didn’t see that coming (even though I saw the preview last week). You know what I mean. It was the standard Mike helps a client plot, but with an added, and welcome, twist. Frankly, the client sidebars have been a little stale for my taste as of late. It was refreshing to watch Michael aiding his former betrothed, Samantha, who is a professional thief. Did you really think he would fall for a “normal” girl? Of course you didn’t.
Samantha was played by Dina Meyer, the first of three sci-fi vets to grace the episode. You may recognize Dina from Star Trek: Nemesis as Commander Donatra and Starship Troopers (one of my faves) where she portrayed the sexy but tough, Dizzy Flores. This time out there were no spaceships to pilot or “bugs” to kill. Instead, she joined forces with Mike to rescue her son from an “evil son-of-a-bitch” named Brennan. I’ve always been a fan of Meyer; she gets better looking with age. Accompanying her in the evening’s festivities were two more familiar faces from the future fantasy genre. If you’re a loyal Burn Notice viewer, you already know who I’m referring to.
Bill Adama spends too much time in Galactica’s belly

I think I need to stop watching Dollhouse before I watch Battlestar Galactica. I get pissed off at having to hear baby Jesus cry at what Fox made Joss do to what just had to be a better show than it is, so then I carry that anger into watching this. So, my apologies if I tend to get ornery at this episode.
That said, I was really getting sick of watching scene after scene of Bill Adama in the dark, watching the ship getting Cylon mud painted on it. Many big-time fans of the show will definitely find these scenes touching and symbolic, as we’re watching Bill nurse his ailing baby while Tigh and Caprica watch after their own. I just found it overkill and obvious filler for an episode that I hoped to be a lot more fulfilling.
Frakkin’ Clack – Catching up with podcasts; Moore and Vernon chat

Much to the happiness of BSG geeks like me, Ron D. Moore has been doing timely podcasts for the remaining episodes of the season, or at least he has for the past two. It’s always interesting to hear what the man has to say on what he was thinking with certain scenes, and the other directions he’d previously considered that got dropped.
Listening to the podcasts is a bit time consuming and calls for free time you might not have, so I’ll do my best to point out some of the highlights for me. Note these are from the first two podcasts, meshed together:
Battlestar Galactica – Little Nikki isn’t so special … or is he?

(Season 4, Episode 12 – “A Disquiet Follows My Soul”)
Beginning population: 39,644
If you watched the Face of the Enemy webisodes, Gaeta’s thought process in this episode should be little shock to you. In fact, I wasn’t really sure why the closing scene had Zarek hiding the “mysterious person” he was talking to, behind him. Didn’t everyone rightly assume it was Gaeta?
That wasn’t the only scene that had me scratching my head. Let’s talk about Tigh. We start with Tigh seeing his baby on the ultrasound monitor, getting cuddly with his Six and smiling about everything she’s going on about, including the preservation of the Cylon race. So, did the musical switch cause the final five (well, four) to decide to quickly embrace what they are, much like Tori did? Let’s not forget that Tigh knows his beloved Ellen is the fifth Cylon. I’m amazed Tigh’s not drowning in a man-sized bottle of scotch throughout the rest of this season with what he’s dealing with; his prior problems were peanuts!
Regarding tonight’s Battlestar Galactica: I can’t say much

I caught tonight’s episode at home last night, as I was sent the official DVD screener. As the paperwork I signed forbids me to mention much of anything, I’ll just have to make it quick and let your imagination run wild … for the most part.
I can’t talk about anything “big” that happens — and there are big things that happen. I can’t go into details about the planet we saw at the end of the last episode, discoveries made there, etc. You’re just going to all have to wait to see about that.
One thing that shouldn’t be a big surprise is that the opening scene is indeed the little preview video we got to see — it all starts right from there.
