30 Rock continues its downward spiral

Aryeh S. on April 24th, 2009 11:00 AM

30 Rock "The Ones"In their infinite wisdom, the powers that be here at CliqueClack have given me the opportunity (yet again) to air my grievances about 30 Rock. Somebody’s asleep at the wheel!

And not only here; over at 30 Rock, as well. Bob’s recently been writing about the good run the show’s been on; permission to respectfully disagree, sir? Because, my God, has the show sucked lately!

Let me be clear: the writing continues to excel. As do Jack (Alec Baldwin), Kenneth (Jack McBrayer), and … right. But that’s about it. When Liz (Tina Fey) has too much to do (non-Jack related), or Jenna (Jane Krakowski) or Tracy (Tracy Morgan) are featured too heavily, 30 Rock sinks into the abyss. They’re capable of delivering solid lines (Fey continues to score in the writer’s room), but they’re just not pleasant to watch. I laugh sporadically during each episode, only to find myself somehow disappointed with it on the whole when it’s over.

However, as we have plenty of fans of the show here at CliqueClack, I’ll share with you some of my memorable moments from last night: Read the rest of this entry »

30 Rock – Tracy panics New York City

Bob Degon on February 27th, 2009 9:00 AM

30 Rock

What a bizarre episode, and that’s saying something for a show like 30 Rock. Between Tracy causing a panic through the whole city, the writers tearing apart the office looking for Tracy’s stash, and Liz’s trek to get her cellphone back, there was a lot of craziness this week.

The highlight for me? That’s an easy one: it had to be Liz trying to pass off 99 Red Balloons as her grandmother’s German lullaby.

30 Rock

What a great episode!

It’s nice to know that I’m not the only person who regularly forgets that Valentine’s day exists. In tonight’s episode, Liz accidently scheduled her first date with Drew for Valentine’s day. Oops. I’m not sure if that doomed the date or not, but the evening could definitely go down as the worst first date in the history of time. If it was going to happen to anyone, it was going to happen to Liz. Although, I have to say, that a good part of the dysfunction sat squarely on Drew’s shoulders.

wildwildwestHollywood loves an easy sell. They prefer projects with built-in audiences because the risk of failure is lessened. More and more producers are looking to repackage television shows from past and present in hopes of striking gold. It may be a lazy practice, but it does make good business sense. In an industry where misses are more frequent than hits, a popular TV series delivered to the big screen properly can mean mega-bucks at the box office.

The only problem with this concept is more often than not, television fails to translate to cinema. If things go awry, it’s best to seek the nearest shelter and avert your eyes from the monumental calamity certain to annihilate your favorite multi-plex. Because when Hollywood screws up, they screw up BIG!!!

30 Rock(Season 3, Episode 8 – “Flu Shot”)

I may have thought that last week’s episode was slightly disappointing, but I thought “Flu Shot” was a great return to form. The long line of guest stars took another rest; I’m not counting Salma Hayek, as she’s sticking around for a multi-episode arc. Tonight also saw an episode that stayed inside of 30 Rockefeller Plaza, dealing with the comforting confines of TGS for the most part. That was refreshing for a change.

30 Rock(Season 3, Episode 7 – “Senor Macho Solo”)

I feel like it’s been a while, and it was good to have 30 Rock back. The season of stunt casting continued this week with Salma Hayek starting her guest starring stint, as well as an appearance by Peter Dinklage (who I loved in Elf and Nip/Tuck). Add in a Janis Joplin biopic, a medical scare, and Liz being Liz and … it all added up to a subpar episode. Bummer.

Someday I would like to be rich enough to buy a shirt made out of money to go with a shiny new pair of gold shoes. It’s never gonna happen, but a boy can dream….
