Tim & Eric Awesome Show, Great Job! – Season 3 DVD review

Oh, Tim and Eric. You assault my brain with such seizure-inducing aggression, I can’t sit through an episode without smelling some hair burning. It’s a good thing I now have the third season on DVD so I can do this at my own pace. And may I suggest that the best way to watch it is really late at night, in a black-hole of a room, with something alcoholic sitting by your side (be it a beer or a tipsy friend). This way, you can wake up several hours later on the couch, with a pouch of sequins inexplicably in your mouth, and a fistful of spaghetti that you don’t remember making, accompanied only by the DVD menu quietly droning through its loop on the screen. I mean, I’m assuming that’s what would happen, anyway. Not like it happened to me. Read the rest of this entry »
Diary of a Six Feet Under virgin – Ruth Crushes on Dwight Schrute, Brenda returns

(Season 3, Episodes 4-7)
Well, I’ve officially fallen for Six Feet Under. I’ve been enjoying the show since I started watching it, but since I’ve gotten into season 3, I’ve become addicted. I don’t know exactly what it was that turned the knob for me, but I can’t get enough of the show now.
More guest stars have begun to pop up, most notably Rainn Wilson as Dwight Schrute Arthur Martin, the new apprentice at Fisher & Diaz. Seriously, though, I can’t look at Wilson in this character and not see Dwight from The Office. I don’t know if it’s a comment on Wilson’s acting, or if they are both just similarly bizarre characters.
Are Jim and Pam good for The Office?
Right off the bat, I’d like to make it clear that I like Jim and Pam together. I was with all the rest of you warm-hearted fans as their relationship rode the rollercoaster of “will they or won’t they,” and I cheered both their secret relationship, their hidden engagement, and finally their plans to imminently wed (the ones that got canceled at the impromptu disco).
No, what I’m wondering is, once Jim and Pam get to the major intersections of life (marriage, children), do they still have a place on The Office? Think about it for a second; this is a show about office humor. Yes, the characters have become such strong individuals that they’ve been able to successfully roam into alternate territories, likeĀ beet farms, new houses, etc. But, ultimately, the show revolves around a bunch of people who work together in an office environment. Stanley’s not going to show up at Dwight’s beet farm with his crossword puzzle and a cup of coffee.

And I was expecting a wedding on The Office
Okay, not really. Maybe earlier in the season, but it became pretty clear that wasn’t going to happen. What we did get was a reunion of Michael and Holly which reaffirmed that there aren’t two people on the planet more suited for one another. Certainly no fully sane person would be able to be completely happy with either of them.
Well, maybe Holly because she seems a bit more grounded, but who else is there for Michael? The picnic was a fun diversion, as it showed us how petty and immature Charles Miner could be (I knew it), how clueless Michael remains capable of being (I knew it) and that Pam and Jim are ready for what’s next (that one I didn’t know).
The Office – In which Michael reaches a new low
Since the beginning, the character of Michael Scott has fluctuated from being endearingly awful and truly awful. He’s created a lot of uncomfortable moments throughout, and we all know he’s a man of low character. So I’m not exactly sure why his actions in this episode bothered me so much. I certainly didn’t find any of it particularly out of character, it was just so incredibly selfish.
It’s one thing to do whatever it takes to make yourself look better, but the earnestness in which he tried to force someone to take the fall for his own blunder was heinous. That things turned out differently in the end only exacerbated his horrible behavior. For most of this season, Michael hasn’t really been that bad. He’s been odd and annoying, yes, but he hasn’t been a despicable person. He was in this episode.
Quotation Marks – Icicles, cartoon pilots and bongs
We started this week off with the Super Bowl, which, despite having some of the worst commercials in recent memory, yielded some pretty great quotes. In fact, between that, The Office, Leverage and 30 Rock, this was a great week for quotes. Below are some of our favorites — feel free to post yours in the comments.
The Super Bowl
“The entire Office cast is assaulted by a strange Xerox repair man played by Conan O’Brien, and it becomes a special Law & Order SVU.” – Rainn Wilson explaining the special episode following the Super Bowl
“Not only has she never been to the Super Bowl, apparently she’s never been to Tampa.” – Bob Costas on seeing Hayden Panettiere’s ridiculous fur-lined boots.
“Stop Drinking!” – Duane Johnson to Al Roker after he screws up the name of the movie again.
“It turns into a car!” – President Obama, telling Matt Lauer just how tricked out his Blackberry is now.
Matt Lauer: “You got replaced [on the cover] with Jessica Simpson….”
President Obama: “Who is in a weight battle apparently.”
“You know they say TV will rot your brain? That’s absurd. TV only softens the brain, like a ripe banana. To take it all the way, we’ve created Hulu.” – Alec Baldwin in the best commercial of the night.
The roast of Michael Scott
“I knew exactly what to do, but in a much more real sense I had no idea what to do.” — Michael Scott (Doesn’t that pretty much sum up Michael Scott in one sentence?)
First of all, I think we all know that Michael is way too sensitive to survive a roast, and this one wasn’t even as scathing as some of the ones we’ve seen. Does that make it even more mean-spirited that the rest of the team went ahead and threw him under the bus? Surely they knew he would be devastated by their comments.
I’m incredibly disappointed that we didn’t get to see Creed roast the maestro. I can’t say for sure he would have been any better than what we did see, but more Creed is always a good thing. Still, there were some good digs, particularly from Pam and Andy. iPod Shuffle? Ouch!
