Showdown – Private Practice vs. Grey’s Anatomy

Who doesn’t love a good, old-fashioned showdown? Today we pit Private Practice against Grey’s Anatomy in an epic Battle of the Medical Soap Operas Sprung from Shonda Rhimes’ Dark and Twisty Mind. I’ll compare three aspects of the shows. Your votes will decide which one is better.
What launches a spin-off just right?
A bit of a dicey question, that. Over the course of this past week, conversations have abounded about the new NCIS spin-off, a show that utilized the previous two episodes of NCIS to potentially launch itself onto the new CBS fall lineup.
Much of the discussion has focused on Grey’s Anatomy’s spin-off, Private Practice, as well as on NCIS itself, product of good old JAG. Which one did a better job? Forgetting about the obvious success of one over the other (not naming names), each show attempted to go about birthing their progeny in a different way.
For JAG, it was the old introduce new characters during an episode (Gibbs, Ducky and Abby), who will later helm the new series. For Grey’s Anatomy, it was send a character (Addison) to a new location and have them move there for their new show.
Private Practice, no more!
That’s right. I’m out baby! I have officially closed the book on Addison (Kate Walsh) and the gang at Oceanside Wellness Center (no offense, Jane). I feel good. A little sad that this time I’m leaving Taye Diggs instead of hanging on for dear life until the network sends him packing, but the truth is he’s kind of MIA these days anyway (and when he is around he’s mooning over his ex Naomi (Audra McDonald)? He’s Taye Diggs! At least give him someone half as good looking as he is!) Read the rest of this entry »
No February sweeps, but the fun sure feels like it

I had so much fun watching TV last week, and I’d normally owe it all to February sweeps. Unlike May sweeps, we’ve got no dramatic cliffhangers and no ‘will they be back’ tension. November sweeps usually bring us two-parters, or some ‘very special episodes.’ But February sweeps seem to deliver just plain fun.
But since February sweeps have been moved to March this year (because of the digital switchover), I guess it was just a fluky week of fun. So what did I find so enjoyable on TV last week? Supporting characters that shined in their own spotlight, an ensemble team doing their thang, notable guest star performances and… hair bands.
See Jane Clack – 24’s Mole, Walter Bishop’s Lab, American Idol’s Crying Boy

The 24 mole. Got any theories on who the FBI mole is on 24? I’m thinking it’s Larry Moss. The guy has some serious stability issues, and not just because his girlfriend Renee was missing and presumed dead. I think Larry is masking a guilty conscience and that’s why he sweats so much.
Dashing Bill Buchanan. And speaking of 24, Bill Buchanan is so dashing and handsome with his white hair. I heard where his real-life alter-ego James Morrison is a devout yoga practitioner and leads yoga sessions for the crew in between scenes. Maybe that’s why Bill stays so calm and cool when all around him people are being shot and drugged.
Charlotte needs to get a clue, Violet and Cooper are great together
You know how you hear about these alternative families? The ones who don’t fit the mold of mom and dad and 2.5 children, but who do just fine and are quite happy?
I think Violet and Cooper would make a great family like that. Neither seems to be able to sustain a romantic relationship for various reasons, but they’re great together, they enjoy each others’ company, and they’re always there for each other.
The story of the abandoned girl in last week’s Private Practice (and what parent would DO that?!) made me think that Violet and Cooper should just take in all the abandoned children that cross their paths. They’re both great with kids, and their combined therapist/pediatrics specialties would cover a lot of ground with these kids. Yeah, I know there are logistical reasons that would make it difficult, but don’t you think they’d be great at it?
Private Practice – Cooper moves in with Violet

(Season 2, Episode 14 – “Second Chances”)
Yeah, I put a big giant spoiler in the title. Got a problem with that?
And speaking of the title … There are friends. And then there are friends like Cooper. I’m not sure if he’s moving in with Violet JUST to help her through the pregnancy, or if he’s moving in with her because he got the power shun from Charlotte on his marriage proposal. I think a little of both.
And speaking of Charlotte, I’m getting more and more tired of her whiny ass. Her hot and cold behavior is driving me batty. A while back, she was mad at Cooper for … something … it couldn’t have been too important. So then Cooper follows her to her hometown to help her get through the death of her dad. Suddenly, she’s all lovey-dovey again and asks Cooper to marry her! Moving kinda fast there, aren’t we? So he thinks she’s just doing it make up for losing her dad and says no, but he still wants to be with her. Then she rebuffs him and decides not to be his girlfriend anymore.
