Cold Case – Too hot for me!

Jackie Schnoop on March 16th, 2009 10:00 AM

Cold Case

This is going to be short, but I promise you it won’t be sweet. Cold Case, what are you doing? Trust me, I’m a crime and police procedural buff. I like watching a good cop show. The problem is (and I’ve mentioned it before) — I watch this show for an entirely different take on the cop show genre! I don’t want lukewarm cases from a year ago. But even more getting my gruff up — I don’t want shows set in the present revolving around the characters!

In the squad room on Cold Case

(Season 6, Episode 16 – “Jackals”)

Phew, finally it’s a cold Cold Case! I know that I threw a thorny snit over the lukewarm recent cold case in the last episode. It’s obvious that CBS listened to me and changed the error of their ways. What? You mean this was filmed before they read my last show review? Well, um … they must have a psychic connection with my mind. They must have realized that I abhor recent cases on the show as that’s not what it’s about. If I want recent cases, I could pick from a gazillion shows. I want my cold cases cold. With a cherry on top, please.

Kathryn Morris from Cold Case

(Season 6, Episode 15 – “Witness Protection”)

Oh, goodness. I think I called it “witless protection” in my header here. Oops. But, I tell you what — I’m going to leave it that way. Why? Well, because I’m a disgruntled witness to tonight’s episode. You know that I’ve harped on lukewarm cases on Cold Case before. Half of the entertainment for me with this show is the music, fashions, past and present character comparisons and the changing times. Hey, I think many of you feel the same way. When we’re given a case that’s a year old, it’s disappointing. Can I get a witness?

Cold Case's Kathryn Morris

(Season 6, Episode 14 – “The Brush Man”)

It was an entirely different world back in 1967. Nowadays it’s rare to have a door-to-door salesman come by the house, with the exception of those dubious magazine subscriptions or religion. But Fuller Brush reigned supreme in 1967 — a quality product line and not just brushes at all. Sure, this story can’t be about Fuller Brush, but a fictional competitor of theirs. We’re talking about Roy Dunn, Sampson’s Brush Man of the Year. Since Fuller Brush still exists (mainly online), the show made it clear the story was not about the Fuller Brush salesmen. Lawsuit averted, I guess. Read on for my review of the show.

Cold Case

(Season 6, Episode 13 – “Breaking News”)

Oh. I forgot to mention “funny hats” in my faux-title, didn’t I? It didn’t really play a huge part in tonight’s episode although it gave the Nick Vera character some screen time. At least the show was back to a cold cold case tonight unlike last week’s lukewarm 2007 case. Hey, we’re talkin’ cold, cold like 1988. Twenty years is pretty doable as unless a witness or suspect was elderly back then (barring untimely deaths), they’d still be around today. I was here then. I’m here now. But I have an alibi for the night in question. I wasn’t in Philly at all that year. What’s your alibi? Read on!

Cold Case

(Season 6, Episode 12 – “Jackpot”)

Now, you’ll note that I say this episode is dubbed “Jackpot” above. I called it that because the official CBS website lists that as the name. However, online TV listings call it “Lotto Fever.” Therein lies the confusion. I personally prefer “Lotto Fever.” But I think “A Lotto Reasons to Kill” would have been fine, too. This wasn’t my favorite episode ever of the show although the story itself wasn’t the problem for me. You see, when I watch Cold Case, I want the cases to be cold, not merely lukewarm or room temperature.

TV Shows Off the Beaten Path – COPS

Jackie Schnoop on November 28th, 2008 12:00 PM

Oh, c’mon. You know you’ve watched it. Heck, it’s in its 21st season. You might not want to admit that it’s a guilty pleasure, but you’ve surely hummed “Bad boys, bad boys, whatcha gonna do when they come for you” and pictured nefarious ne’er-do-wells in their dirty wife-beater t-shirts with cans of Bud in their hands. COPS is a bit of a cultural phenomenon with a catchy theme song. However, it’s rarely reviewed and folks just don’t talk about it much at all. Thus, it makes it on the “Off the Beaten Path” list.
