(Season 3, Episodes 16-18)

Thank god for Paul Rudd. With no big mystery stringing these final episodes together, there isn’t a whole lot of focus. Keith is back in the sheriff’s office — which is still strange — and the dating musical-chairs game is in full swing. It’s a shame, as this certainly isn’t a really strong way to end the series. I’ve been told that the series finale is a strong one, though. I’ll find out soon. Read the rest of this entry »

Mad Men, you guys. MAD MEN. Does it make my life sound completely pathetic if I say that tonight’s return is what I have been living for? I mean, yes, my child has still been clothed and fed, but come on … Don effin’ Draper is coming back! Tonight! What’s so great about this isn’t just that one of my favorite shows currently on television is coming back, but Jon Hamm, who plays the aforementioned Don Draper, has been charming his way across the talk shows this week. From Conan, to Jimmy Fallon, to Regis and Kelly, he’s been hitting them all — and staying awesome the whole time. So with that, I present to you this week’s column, completely devoted to Don Draper (AKA Jon Hamm). Read the rest of this entry »

SNL Lawrence Welk with Will Ferrell

Another season of Saturday Night Live come and gone. 34 seasons is an impressive feat for any program. This show really has become an institution, as well as a launching point for many comedy careers. One of those careers is Will Ferrell’s, so it seems right that he is back hosting the season finale. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that he has a big summer movie opening this year too.

I was happy to see that SNL ended the season on a high note, as I thought this was one of the best episodes of the season. Like last week there were a ton of special appearances and cameos, some oddly placed, but they were still fun. Let’s break it down….

Neil Patrick HarrisI know that everyone was really excited about NPH hosting SNL, and I certainly thought that it paid off. Expectations are hard to meet, especially when you’re talking about Saturday Night Live, but I thought that this week’s episode was one of the best of the season. Between rocking out the Doogie Howser theme on a keyboard, slapping on a horrible wig and some massive press-on nails, and delivering a great monologue, NPH gave a great performance. Because we like to speak in hyperbole, and arbitrarily rank unimportant things, I have to ask the question: Was Neil Patrick Harris the best host yet this season?

(Season 34, Episode 8)

I will admit that my hopes were high this week.  Paul Rudd is a funny dude, and I was hoping that SNL would come through with some great political lampooning. Boy was I disappointed. I don’t know if I was just in the wrong frame of mind to watch SNL, but I didn’t find many laughs in this episode. There were so many opportunities for great skits this week – Barack Obama meeting with Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama and George Bush meeting at the White House, meetings about the new cabinet. How about something about those ridiculous holograms that CNN used on election night? Yet the only sniff of political satire we got was in the cold open. What a let down.

Join me as I bitch, skit by skit.
