Does Derek Shepherd need to grow up?

Jane Boursaw on February 21st, 2009 9:00 AM

Just when I think Derek Shepherd has decided to grow up and be a man, he does something to remind me that he’s still a spoiled brat.

In this week’s episode of Grey’s Anatomy, one of Derek’s surgeries went horribly wrong, so what does he do? Takes it out on his former (and possibly current?) best friend Mark Sloan by punching him in the face, causing the two grown men to roll around like boys in a schoolyard. In the middle of a crowded area of the hospital.

That’s so good for patient and doctor morale, isn’t it? It’s a mystery why Seattle Grace has even made it to 12th best hospital in the country. The lawsuits must be flying fast and furious by now.

Just when I was thinking Derek and Meredith would get their happy ending, Addison calls and messes things up! Yeah, I know she had a good reason, but Derek had the flowers and candles and everything all set (thanks to Sloan, which was funny in itself)!

But I believe Shonda Rhimes will hold true to her statement about giving Derek and Meredith a happy ending. OK, I’m sure it won’t be all happy, but hopefully, they’ll make it work one way or another.

(Season 5, Episode 12 – “Stairway to Heaven” Grey's Anatomy - Grey's Anatomy, Season 5 - Stairway to Heaven)

“I believe in Heaven … I also believe in Hell. I’ve never seen either, but I believe they exist. They have to exist, because without a Heaven, without a Hell, we’re all just headed for limbo.” – Denny’s voiceover

Holy Talomey, what an episode! We had people cracking up all over the place, and I was gripped, GRIPPED I tell you. And Denny’s ominous words, “I’m here for you, Izzie Stephens,” now make sense. I think.

So it’s looking like maybe Izzie’s got that brain tumor … or something … we’ve all been speculating about. But whether she’ll actually succumb to it or not remains to be seen. You know, Denny could have helped her figure it out sooner. It might be too late now.  I totally understand why she was ticked at him.

Kevin McKidd saved Grey’s Anatomy

Debbie McDuffee on November 23rd, 2008 4:58 PM

I was just about to give up on Grey’s. I was tired of too many lackluster episodes, of Meredith whining, of hoping Derek would see the light, of Lexie being too cute, of George being too negative, of Alex being too damaged.

The only things that kept me hanging on were the occasional scenes where someone would tell someone else off  — man, they write those scenes well on Grey’s — and the two or three episodes a season that hit it out of the park. That’s what I remember Grey’s being about, and it is discouraging we don’t get those every week anymore.

Enter Kevin McKidd … or should I say, Kevin McKidd bursts onto the scene, bigger than life, and saves the floundering series. How’d he do that?

(Season 5, Episode 5)

“I’m exhausted, but if you wanna hop on and do all the work … ” – Sloan to Callie, who just wants someone to listen about her relationship issues with Erica

Well, kudos to Derek for seeing the error of his ways! I was ready to punch him through the TV set when he told Meredith that she had a lot to learn as a surgeon. I’m like, where is this coming from?! Is he so self-involved that he doesn’t recognize that “The Shepherd Method” was actually her idea?

But all was forgiven (by both me and Meredith) when he arrived at the bar with the kidney-in-a-jar gift. Aw, that’s so sweet. And I totally get that because my mom was an E.R. nurse and likewise fascinated by surgical stuff (while we all gagged).

(Season 5, Episode 3)

Grey’s Anatomy has come a long way since it premiered in 2005, and I feel like I know these characters pretty well. So I just have a few things I’d like to say after tonight’s episode:

Chief, you should probably be removed from your post. I mean, you’ve got a hospital with some serious leakage issues, to the point where the ceilings are bulging and cracking from all the water. Don’t you think you should have started moving patients out just a teensy bit sooner? Like before things started flooding out of control? It’s no wonder Seattle Grace’s ratings have dropped to number 12. Step aside, Chief. Let Bailey take over. She’s the only one with any common sense around there.
