Is The Vampire Diaries the next Buffy?

THE VAMPIRE DIARIES

Before you go all batty on me, let’s break it down: I saw the pilot episode, and sure, there are elements of Buffy, but I think The Vampire Diaries borrows a bit from most of the vamp entertainment out there. The question is, will it be able to branch out and become unique and wonderful in its own right?

We’ve got high school kids, a good boy vampire trying to fit in, and an evil vampire trying to thwart the good boy’s efforts. Buffy, Moonlight, and Being Human, respectively.

Or, more Twilight-y, you say? It seems to reek of it, I agree, but if they do it right, we’ll end up with a smart show. Yeah, Twilight, I meant that.

(Season One, Episodes 3 & 4)

Welcome back to this week’s edition of, “Vampire Private Detective in LA, Part Deux”  Last week, we were introduced to the world of Moonlight. This week, its time to explore it a little more. Our stories include a vampire in his infancy, throwing what basically is a temper tantrum, and a case where Mick protects one of Josh the Boyfriend’s witnesses. As I mentioned before, I really like the stories that are less about vampires, and more about a vampire being a PI. As such, the fourth episode worked a lot more for me.

glenn_close_damagesThere was plenty of clacking going on inside my head this week, everything from those stupid KFC commercials to Moonlight to the Super Bowl. Take a peek, and let me know if you agree or disagree in the comments section:

I wish 24 and Damages were better this season. Sure, it’s swell having them back, but so far, I’m not rabid for the next episodes or anything. That saddens me, because I really love both of these series, and it doesn’t get much better than Glenn Close and William Hurt. Hopefully, both shows will get better and have me pining to see what happens next. Or maybe I just expect too much. I didn’t even realize I felt this way about Damages until Modwild pointed it out to me in the comments last week. Mod, I don’t know whether to thank you or curse you!

alex_oloughlin_moonlightI’ve been hearing people rave about Moonlight since it premiered on CBS in the 2007-2008 season. I should know by now that whenever there’s a major cult following for a show, you’ve gotta believe it’s something special. But you never really know until you watch it for yourself.

Now I know. Moonlight is special. And for one major reason: Alex O’Loughlin as Mick St. John, an adorable vampire who can melt your heart with his eyes. When he looks at Beth, played by Sophia Myles, oh my gosh. I wish I was on the receiving end of those soulful looks. Let’s just say that any butter within close proximity is melting into a puddle. I’m just part-way into the series, and I know the show’s sad story about being cut woefully short. But I’ll enjoy the Mick ride while it lasts. Watch full episodes of Moonlight here.

Even if the new TV season has started about a month ago (although most series returned last week), I find myself watching loads of reruns. Thanks to satellite TV and the likes, TV viewers have many choices of shows to catch in reruns at all times of day. If you like all three versions of CSI, you could even probably find a way to watch it 24/7!

I occasionally watch reruns of shows that are currently on the air and that I didn’t have time to watch when they first aired: the CSIs, the Law & Orders, Eureka, Pysch, Monk, etc. When I’m really bored and find nothing to watch on the 100+ channels I have at home, I’ll watch reruns of The Simpsons, Futurama, Seinfeld, Friends and other sitcoms. However, I find myself making weekly, if not daily, appointments with canceled TV series I didn’t watch at all or in their entirety during their run. Is your TV viewing schedule filled with reruns of canceled TV series? Are my picks on your list? Read on! Read the rest of this entry »
