This week’s See Jane Clack has me pondering vampires. Oh, the vampires I’ve loved and lost. OK, I’ve never really had them, but let’s just put it this way: while I’m watching the TV shows and movies, they’re all mine. When the show leaves the air, then I’ve lost them. Until I watch the DVDs, that is; then they’re mine again. Spike, Angel (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel), Mick St. John (Moonlight) … heck, even Barnabas Collins (Dark Shadows) was mine back in the day, but he was a little creepier than the aforementioned vamps.

But this week, I’m brooding over True Blood’s Bill Compton and Twilight’s Edward Cullen. These are two vampires I hold close in my heart, only in different ways….

I know I’ve professed my love for Leverage in the past (and by the past, I meant, you know, this weekend), but I really was taken aback by the way they portrayed Lincoln, NE. The quotes were funny, yes, but having lived in Omaha, its not that backwards. Oh, and for the record, I LOVE chicken fried steak, especially because it’s more of a Southern thing, and I can’t stand pork rinds. Also, this week Brett took a look at the “missing” episode of Dollhouse, and we, of course, dove into the Virgin Diaries.

(Season One, Episodes 15 & 16)

It would be disingenuous of me to say that “All good things come to an end,” because I just haven’t’ been able to jump on board the bandwagon that everyone else has. As many people have advised me, the show definitely grew on me as time wore on, but at the end of the day, I would not have given it a chance to grow on me. I’m glad I’ve taken the opportunity to go back and watch all of the episodes, because there certainly was a lot of good to be found in Moonlight.

Alex O’Laughlin is going to be a player, and I’ll probably watch Three Rivers this season just because he’s involved. Sophia Myles’ Beth also grew on me as the season wore on. I don’t need to say much about Jason Dohring, because I’ve been singing his praises since the first episode. I think he’s also going to have a long career in Hollywood.

(Season One, Episodes 13 & 14)

I will admit, Moonlight has steadily grown on me, especially in the last several episodes. I’m still pretty tough on it, though, because I think the premise is unoriginal, I don’t really like their vampire ‘rules,’ and I have been fairly creeped out by the romantic angle of the show. That being said, the storylines have gotten tighter, we’ve seen more of Josef (and more of Josef/Mick, which is a great relationship), and I might finally be seeing some light at the end of the Beth/Mick tunnel.

(Season One, Episode 11 & 12)

A whole lot of plot development occurred in these two episodes. I’m finally rid of Josh (though, now I’m not so sure it’s a good thing), and we get a glimpse of what the real Coraline might be. Just a couple of episodes left before the shortened end of the show, and I’m starting to see why people talked about the grander arc that was beginning to be developed.

“Love Lasts Forever”

Funny story (well, funny to me): I’m visiting my family for the Fourth, and my mom was around when I watched this episode (She was a BIG Moonlight fan). When the teaser started, and Mick was ‘working out’ (because really, who does pull ups using stairs), she made the comment, “Great opening scene.” By the time the boyfriend got jumped by the creeps intimidating him to drop his case, I felt the exact same way.

Both of this week’s stories were, in my eyes, the best yet. Another private detective story, and then a look into the interesting backstory of Josef. If this is the peak though, then I am not sure I’ll ever be sold on Moonlight as a show. I know I’ve been tough on it, and I realize that there is a lot of good about the show. If they can sustain this level of quality through the last six episodes, though, that story might change.

I couldn’t help but use this image from last week’s True Blood of Lafayette’s ‘visit’ to the office at Fangtasia, as the scene, and the quote, was probably the funniest moment on television this week. He has got to be one of the most quotable characters on the air today; I’m sure he’ll continue to show up in this column week after week.
