weeds season 5 andyThere are shows, or anything really, that spend a lot of time and/or energy on building something up. And then, there are shows that can get something right in an instant.

I’m not an Esteban (Demian Bichir) fan. I think he’s a very ugly person. But his interactions with the Botwin crew have been priceless. From last week when he met Andy, to this week with Shane (Alexander Gould) and Silas (Hunter Parrish), Esteban can be a really funny guy when thrust into an uncomfortable situation that he can’t just shoot his way out of.

And that’s also an area that the show itself excels in. Weeds has always put people into farcical situations, and it’s generally the humor employed that makes the series so enjoyable. Of course, sometimes the humor can slide into absurdity (what the hell was Nancy doing throwing lit matches at Celia?), but when it stays on this side of the track, it’s hilarious. Sucio rocks Weeds!

Aryeh S. on June 23rd, 2009 3:00 PM

Weeds season 5.3 DougI told you! I told you that Sucio, silent movie and all, would rock episode three of the fifth season of Weeds! How great was he? I mean, I can’t get the image of him sanding off a guy’s face (season 4) out of my head, but he definitely knows how to play the silent comic. Go Mexico!

Unfortunately, the guy’s missing, and I’m willing to bet he’ll never return. But, I’m glad we got to see another side of him before he left us. It may have been dark comedy, but that’s the show. If you’re really expecting something different, you’re on the wrong page.

With all the good going on so far this season, let’s take a minute to dispense with the bad. What is going on with Celia, and why is she still around to annoy us? And, yes, I know that a lot of you love her, but she’s terrible! From her arcs, to her annoying voice and dialogue, there’s nothing useful about her. She adds nothing to the show. Even the Mexican rebels dumped her on a bus out of town. While I realize that in Weeds’ world, that was in order to set up her next storyline, but, I have to imagine that there’s something more behind that. When will the writer’s ship her off and away from us? Read the rest of this entry »

Why the new Weeds crew?

Aryeh S. on June 16th, 2009 11:00 AM

WEEDS (season 5) premiere

All you Weeds-in-Mexico haters, I know what’s really bothering you. I get it. You don’t understand who Nancy runs with these days. And, I hear you. I mean, I miss the old gang, too. Things were a lot lighter with them, a lot more fun.

Well, stop your whining! What’re you going to do? Those days are gone, man. You’re stuck on some clown from the sixties, man … sorry; wrong show.

But, really, you have to embrace the new, because, otherwise, you’re just punishing yourself. Like I’ve said before: Weeds is back, and it’s not waiting for any of you deserters.

Weeds Season 5 - Mary-Louise ParkerWeeds is back. And I don’t mean, like, returning to Showtime’s lineup (although season 5 premieres this Monday night, at 10PM), I mean, it’s BACK. As in, while season 4 was kinda Mexico crazy, season 5 gets right back into season 3’s saddle and gets us set for an awesome ride!

Not ready for season five? Go check out a clearly battle-scarred Kona, and her virgin diary. Marathoning through season 4? Read Jane’s take on the DVD set first. But, for those of you ready for a new season:

Like many fans of the show, I tired very easily of the world that Nancy Botwin (Mary-Louise Parker) sunk her family into this past season. Mexican drug kingpins, angry, almost violent, sexual encounters with Esteban (Demian Bichir), and the overall seedy underbelly of a world that an upper-middle class family would never encounter in real life. Weeds had become something that none of us, Nancy included, were prepared for. The season 4 finale, in which Nancy is caught informing to the DEA, and subsequently slips Esteban an ultrasound picture of their love child, set me up to believe that season 5 would be more of the same ugliness.

With all of that trepidation, I popped in a screener for the first three episodes of the new season, fearing that what I was about to see would completely turn me off of a show that I had really grown to enjoy, once upon a time. Boy was I glad to be wrong! Read the rest of this entry »
