Alien Nation

Early last month I had a little e-chat with writer/producer Jane Espenson about the Buffy Season Eight comic she’s been a part of (came out yesterday — go pick it up!). At the end of that interview, I asked Jane which sci-fi show she’d like to see get a Battlestar Galactica-like reboot next. Her answer: Alien Nation. As it turns out, word came yesterday that that’s exactly what Syfy plans to do.

Not only is Alien Nation getting the reboot treatment, but what’s really interesting (and damn cool) is who’s helming it: Angel, Dollhouse and Firefly producer Tim Minear. I wonder if Jane’s heard of him.

Jane EspensonIt seems anywhere I turn these days, Jane Espenson has some hand in many things TV-related that I love. I was turned on to her writing magic with Buffy the Vampire Slayer, of course, but it hasn’t ended there. Battlestar Galactica fans no doubt know of her involvement with that series, and it’s continuing on with the Caprica prequel series, for example.

Once again I grabbed the ear … well, the typing fingers of Ms. Espenson to ask some burning questions I had about some new projects she’s been involved in. As it turns out, fans of hers have a lot to look forward to.

Buffy without Joss? Sign me up!

Chances are that if you’re perusing the wares at CliqueClack, you’ve already heard about this latest Buffy kerfuffle somewhere in your internet travels. The Hollywood Reporter started things, running a short piece that suggested the Kuzuis have been talking with Vertigo about a new Buffy movie and … OMG … it might not involve Joss Whedon. The resulting outrage from Buffy fans was not unexpected, with the overwhelming reaction being, “No Joss, no way!” I find myself in the minority on this, because I disagree. Dollhouse group photo

We waited, patiently and politely … OK, maybe not so patiently or politely, but we waited anxiously and fervently for Joss Whedon to return to television. And return he did, with a powerful new tale of the Dollhouse, where conspiracies abound. We mourned the loss of Dollhouse before it even began, because, alas, it would be on FOX.

Now here we are, at the end of it’s short season, waiting again, this time to see if this on the bubble show will be renewed for a second season. We don’t need to have faith in FOX to know that Dollhouse should be renewed. Here’s why:

ellen tighActually, that title’s totally misleading, because I’ve got nothing more to say about it. Well, nothing enlightening, at least. Since “Deadlock” aired, I’ve had time to think about the episode a bit more and listen to Moore’s accompanying podcast. My conclusion is that the episode was very unremarkable, especially for a fifth-out from the finale episode.

Listening to Ron Moore’s podcast for this episode didn’t do it any favors. He starts things off by telling us he doesn’t really have many notes for it. So right off, I felt pretty justified in thinking the episode was lackluster and, dare I say, a bit filler-esque. I already went into how disappointed I was in Ellen’s attitude with Saul, so no need to hash that out further here.

Warehouse 13You may be a fan of Stargate Atlantis, Ghost Hunters, Sanctuary or any number of other Sci Fi shows, but let’s face it; its crown jewel is Battlestar Galactica. So, one has to wonder: what’s going to happen at Sci Fi when BSG is over?

You may recall that last October, I went on a little “ride-along” with the Ghost Hunters, accompanied by a representative of NBC Universal/Sci Fi. We had a lot of time to kill in between everything going on, so we talked a bit about what Sci Fi is banking on — what will be the next “big” show for them — now with Stargate Atlantis over and Battlestar Galactica right behind it?

Caprica? Nope. Her answer: Warehouse 13.

Saul Tigh - Webisode 10

Since the last Frakkin’ Clack, the final two Battlestar Galactica webisodes made their way (officially) online. In my experience, webisodes usually don’t reveal anything “big” or plot oriented that regular viewers of the televised show would necessarily miss. This time, though, we got a juicy nugget of info in episode nine that relates back to episode 13 of season three (“Taking A Break From All Your Worries”Battlestar Galactica - Battlestar Galactica, Season 3 - Taking a Break from All Your Worries), with what Baltar whispered in Gaeta’s ear.

I recall, back when “Worries” aired, that there was a lot of speculation and discussion about what Baltar could have said to Gaeta to make him lash out so violently. I don’t think writer Jane Espenson was clear on whether that decision was made long ago or just now for these webisodes. Rather than spoil it for you, go check out the webisode and find out what Baltar said.
