Jacob's Cabin

I would be remiss to talk about my favorite moments of Lost and not discuss Ben and Locke’s trip to Jacob’s cabin in “The Man Behind the Curtain.” For so long, we had wondered about Jacob, details trickling in slowly (very slowly) over time. Heck, we didn’t even know his name for a few seasons. Then finally the moment came late into season three, when Locke had had enough and insisted on seeing this mysterious “Jacob.” The results, having been built up for three years, were spectacular, making for one of the best moments in one of the best episodes of Lost.

Lost

I was talking with my brother this weekend at a family cookout and we inevitably got to discussing the Lost finale. He’s almost as obsessed with the show as I am. The focus of our conversation was on the big question that came out of the finale: where the hell is this show going? With the way they ended this season (the big bang)  the show could go in so many directions. The crux of the matter really comes down, however, to whether or not Juliet was successful in changing the future. Here is where I begin to blatantly steal all of my brother’s ideas.

LostI’m still trying to digest the finale. Aren’t we all? Before I really dig deep into it, I wanted to go back and look at the opening scene of last week’s double episode, as I think there is a lot of information that can be gleaned from it.

The scene in question, of course, is the one between Jacob and Jacob’s as-of-yet-unnamed enemy, watching the Black Rock heading toward the island. The scene was cryptic, as only Lost can be, but I do think there are some things worth discussing.

Everything is falling into place for the big finale. This episode, while entertaining, was one of those frustrating episodes. It’s one that if I were watching season 5 on DVD, I wouldn’t be able to resist watching the two hour finale, regardless of what time it was or what sort of obligations I had. Unfortunately, I’m not watching on DVD and we’re all forced to wait another week for the season finale. It was all set up this week for the end of the season, and, as usual, things are shaping up for a great finale (or FINALE EVENT!!! as ABC would like us to believe).

Before we get too ahead of ourselves, however, let’s talk about this week’s episode.

LostIn this week’s episode of Lost, there was a ton of mythology explored. We were treated to some of Danielle Rousseau’s backstory and though it was brief, it was great! We learned some new things about the smoke monster, and in true Lost fashion, even more questions were raised. As if that wasn’t enough, we also got another glimpse of Jacob, or at the very least Christian Shephard acting as his envoy. I’m still trying to wrap my head around some of these things, but I’ve got some thoughts…

I’ve never been a huge fan of the Claire character on Lost. I’ve always found her slightly annoying, mostly due to her propensity to walk up and down the beach yelling “Chah-leee!” at the top of her lungs. It drove me nuts.

When her rocker boyfriend sacrificed himself to get his fellow castaways saved I found myself a lot more sympathetic to the island’s blonde mommy. Besides being far less annoying, she’s been given a big juicy mythological plot. She’s not just being pregnant, whining at Charlie, and getting kidnapped. Instead she seems to have up and disappeared. This all leads to one big question – what the hell is Claire’s deal these days?

One of the things that I love about Lost is that we don’t really know what’s going on.  I know a lot of people find this annoying and would love to just have all the answers, but I’m patient.  I love the slow burn of this show, essentially getting to play along, trying to put all the pieces together as I watch.  A big part of the online Lost community is coming up with theories and ideas about where the plot is going and what the island really is. Well, I think I have the answer… or a possible answer anyway.

After carefully examining all the unknowns and outstanding mysteries, pouring over the clues and subtle details I am fairly confident that I have all the answers. Are you prepared to know what’s going to happen?  Are you prepared to know the true nature of Jacob, the island, and those mysterious lists?  Do you dare find out?
