Eureka – Freaky Friday + Portal = Fun

There was something a little different going on behind the scenes this week with our friends in Eureka. Thanks to the crazy mid-season break, we’ve been hearing about this episode for months. Everyone’s favorite Sheriff, Colin Ferguson, was pulling double duty. Not content to just be the star of the show, this week he was also the director. That title change also played out in the writing as we found Carter relegated to a side story, giving us a look at what a Eureka with a Sheriff Lupo might look like. Along the way, more crazy science, a romantic angle for Fargo, and the ugly side of Allison? Read the rest of this entry »
Eureka – From Fear To Eternity
(Season 3, Episode 8) “Good afternoon. My name is Jo Lupo, and I’ll be saving your ass today.”
Yes, we’ve come to the end of another weird Sci Fi Channel partial season. Our friends from Eureka are heading off to break, but there are another 13 episodes of season three still to come, at some point. This was planned all along, which means that the powers that be were looking to this episode as a finale of sorts. And they treated it as such. The show went out with quite a bang, literally and figuratively.
There were also answers to be had for questions that had been building all season. What was Eva’s secret? Who were those mysterious bodies? Would that mysterious goo Zoe slipped in ever be addressed? All of that was cleared up, and they even managed a cliffhanger that will drop us into the back half at full speed. Read the rest of this entry »
Eureka – Stay Cool Under Pressure
I know that isn’t the proper title of the episode, but then, this isn’t a proper review. And really, the big story in last night’s episode wasn’t the election, or the star created by a nine year old that was threatening to go supernova. The big story was product placement taken to its ridiculous extreme.
I’ll say, I feel for the people behind the show. It’s apparent that they were stuck with this product placement deal, and were left to do the best they could with it. To that end, I suppose they did alright. They managed an entertaining episode, but man, it got rough when they had to jackhammer Degree into the picture. There was an exchange between Zane and Fargo that was especially uncomfortable.
The crates of Degree stacked everywhere on the GD set didn’t help matters. At one point there is one setting on top of a work bench. Clearly, it’s there for no other reason than to get it in the shot just right. Most annoying of all though was the phrase. Good lord, if I hear one more person say “Stay cool under pressure.”
I still like the show, and the people behind it. And I’m hoping that we’ve now weathered the storm and put these kind of shenanigans behind us. The other option, that this was a glimpse of the future of television, is just too depressing.
