Kris wins American IdolWell, there were probably a lot of non-fans of the reality television genre breathing huge sighs of relief this past week as yet another season of American Idol wrapped up. Survivor Tocantins also ended last Sunday night, but on a very different note. Both shows went out in gala style. However, one was a shocker and the other was pretty much a given.

I personally don’t care so much who won what on the reality shows I watch. Sure, there are folks like delusional Ben “Coach” Wade whom I want off my TV set the moment I see them. But my criteria for a good season always remains … was I entertained? Regarding Survivor and American Idol, yes. Yes, I was very entertained.

Phil Keoghan, host of The Amazing RaceOh no! Some of my favorite shows are just about done for the season and some are already history. The Celebrity Apprentice and The Amazing Race both wrapped up last night, and it’s not long to go for other shows on my “must see TV” list. American Idol is down to the final three. Yikes! How fast time flies!

Of course, the end of these shows only means that other shows I enjoy aren’t too far in the future — So You Think You Can Dance and Big Brother (my summer guilty pleasure) will be coming along soon. Usually I run a week behind reporting on the shows which air on Sunday nights. However, due to the season finales, please be warned that there will be finale show spoilers for both The Amazing Race and The Celebrity Apprentice after the jump.

Joan Rivers stomps off The Celebrity ApprenticeThankfully, my life isn’t quite like reality television. I don’t know if I could handle all the drama! On The Celebrity Apprentice, Joan Rivers packed her bags, had a thorny snit over Trump firing her daughter, and took off after slamming some of the others. Over on American Idol, there was a shocker in the bottom three this past week.

As we head towards the season finales of all the current reality shows, things are heating up. That includes tempers, strategies, alliances and, need we forget … song choices are more important than ever. After all, I never leave my house without the perfect song in mind to start off my day. Um … today? “Rainy Days and Mondays.”

Clint Black and Joan Rivers on The Celebrity ApprenticeIt was a week of controversy on some of the shows in the reality television genre. After all, there’s the Joan Rivers and Clint Black hatefest on The Celebrity Apprentice, not to mention the oddly-reasoned firings of two of the celebrities on the show. David Alan Grier’s very … um … eloquent exit from Dancing With the Stars is certainly one for the books.

Meanwhile, a fan favorite team was Philiminated on The Amazing Race and American Idol viewers voted yet another contestant into the dark crevice known as “you’re on the tour, but you ain’t the one” status. The tribe didn’t have to speak on Survivor as an injury made the decision for them. Let’s get right into the skinny!

American Idol's Adam LambertMarch Madness is wreaking havoc on CBS shows, in general, reality genre or not. I suppose the whole thing could be construed to be one huge reality show, brackets and all. But I won’t be covering it. Nothing against basketball, but I never understand why the college games are virtually ignored by major networks all during the season and then they air ‘em like nothing else exists come March on CBS.

Basketball didn’t keep American Idol away for its “country week” this past week. Nor did it trip up Dancing With the Stars. But it did cost us a week of Survivor (no show this past Thursday). This week’s Survivor will air on Wednesday night against American Idol. It’s going to be the clips show, so it surely will get ratings-stomped by AI. Oh, just a warning — the President is in the mix on Tuesday night further discombobulating the TV schedules.

Oh my. For a few of the reality shows, this past Thanksgiving holiday week meant it was time for clips shows. You know the promos — “with previously unseen footage.” What they don’t mention is the percentage of “already seen” footage. Alas, they’re usually outright recap shows with teensy tidbits of new footage. Goodness knows, we don’t have enough recap material at the start of each episode already!

The huge reality television happening of the week was the season finale of Dancing With the Stars. Well, that is unless you count the debut of Snoop Dogg’s Father Hood as the big event. Each has its audience.

Whoa, time does fly for the fall seasons of reality shows, doesn’t it? Dancing With the Stars is almost to the finale stage as is The Amazing Race. The finale went down this week for America’s Next Top Model. Sure, Top Chef is just getting its start. But we’re soon going to be lacking our reality fixes until the winter season kicks off in January and February.

Alas, that also means that American Idol will once again take over the world as we know it. I saw David Archuleta on The Bonnie Hunt Show earlier this week. Yes, he’s talented and a cute kid. But my gosh … the hoopla all over again is a scary thought.
