Dollhouse with Joss Whedon

Even months before FOX’s Dollhouse premiered, campaigns to save the show appeared on the Internet. Still haunted by the memories of the treatment their beloved Firefly received by the very same network, Whedon fans were desperate to see their master’s new work last. In some ways they were right to be scared. News of the pilot being reshot caused alarm bells to sound, especially when it seemed to be against Joss’s plans. Yet, the show did make it to not only air, but it carried out the complete season and got a surprising renewal.

During its first season, those “Save Dollhouse” campaigns were little heard from. Apparently, even the ratings not being so hot — and the show in danger of not getting a second season pickup — didn’t worry the fans. The renewal was granted, and there was much celebration. And Dollhouse was no longer in need of being saved.

Dollhouse finally gave the world the final episode of season one last week, at the San Diego Comic-Con…. OK, so it really gave the rest of us the episode this week, with the DVD and Blu-ray release, but who’s splitting hairs? Brett talked about it last week, but now that everyone is getting a chance to see it, I wanted to chime in with my thoughts.

The same spoiler warnings apply if you still haven’t seen it, but if you haven’t, what the hell? Stop what you’re doing, drive to your local Best Buy (or DVD retailer of your choice), and then come back and talk to me. (And yes, I know the torrent has been available for a week or two now, but follow the guest star of the episode’s advice, and buy the DVD, or you can win a copy from us).

TerminatorHonestly, I’ve been preparing myself for a while for this inevitability, so I’m really not that broken up about Terminator’s official cancellation. Yes, I will miss the show; it was one that I considered to be smart, interesting, and well-acted. Unfortunately, as the ratings showed, not enough people agreed with me. Certainly, the unexpected renewal of Dollhouse helped to ease the sting, but I wonder why Dollhouse got a reprieve and Terminator didn’t. Add in the fact that Terminator Salvation is opening this summer and it seems like FOX could have taken a chance that the movie might have sparked interest in the show.

You could say that I follow television ratings a little closer than the average bear. I monitor the numbers for my favorite shows the way a 35 year old woman with a ticking biological clock charts her basal body temperature. It’s precisely for that reason that I have no idea what FOX is up to with the renewal of Dollhouse for a second season. Where the ratings are concerned, there is no convincing reason to be bringing the show back. That’s not to say I’m disappointed by the development. I’ll be happy to enjoy another 13 Whedon episodes on Rupert’s dime. However, it does leave me wondering just what show will be coming back. Read the rest of this entry »

We waited, patiently and politely … OK, maybe not so patiently or politely, but we waited anxiously and fervently for Joss Whedon to return to television. And return he did, with a powerful new tale of the Dollhouse, where conspiracies abound. We mourned the loss of Dollhouse before it even began, because, alas, it would be on FOX.

Now here we are, at the end of it’s short season, waiting again, this time to see if this on the bubble show will be renewed for a second season. We don’t need to have faith in FOX to know that Dollhouse should be renewed. Here’s why:
