(Season 3, Episode 8 – “The Damage A Man Can Do”)

The student becomes the teacher. We’ve been seeing, for several episodes now, Miguel prodding Dexter for more information into his dark ways. And all along the way, Harry is that angel (or devil) on Dexter’s shoulder, the former teacher seeing his student grow up … and he’s not liking what he sees.

Dexter, on the other hand, sure looked like one proud papa.

Assuming there are 12 episodes in the season, as there have been in seasons past, we’ve got only four more installments to wrap season three of Showtime’s Dexter. How are they going to tie up their latest serial killer, The Skinner, in a tidy little bow? There are so many questions left ….

After the jump, join me for some slight spoilers, some predictions from around the web and some in-depth analysis of The Skinner’s M.O.

(Season 3, Episode 7)

Put together the “previously on” scenes, Dexter’s conversations with Camilla and the title of this episode, it didn’t take a genius to figure out if or how Dexter was going to put her out of her misery. And, again, it doesn’t really matter that things are put right in front of our faces to figure out. There’s no trickery here — no mysterious hatch on the island or seeing dead people. It’s great writing and good acting, simple as that.

(Season 3, Episode 6)

In case you’re wondering, the episode title translates roughly to “if it can be.” Well, that’s Google’s literal translation, but it really means “yes, it can be done.” Miguel has gone out of his way to prove to Dexter that this is a moto he can attach to their little relationship, and Dexter’s clearly not sure he’s ready to deal with that fully just yet.

I go on about this show being predictable, though one thing that I have totally no idea about is who this Skinner is and why he (or she!) is doing what they’re doing. Wouldn’t it be outlandish if the writers threw us for a loop, and it’s Dexter who’s doing all of this on the side, and he’s just not making us aware of it? With Harry popping up more often in Dexter’s head, I wouldn’t take crazy dual-personality off the table for him.

As you know, another Halloween is just about here. If you’re planning on heading out to do some ‘treating of your own or maybe heading out to a costume party, if you haven’t figured out what you’re going to dress as yet, you might be stuck with a sack on your head, my friend.

Yeah, a sacked head might not be all that scary … well, unless you’re carrying it in a sack … but times are tough and costumes and props are damn pricey. So why not do away with any props — even a sack — and go as one of the shite-yourself, scariest characters from television who look like regular Joes? A few minor tweaks to your wardrobe and hair, and a room full of people who have some semblance of an imagination, and you’re golden.

(Season 3, Episode 5)

When explaining what this show’s about to someone who’d never heard of it before, do you feel compelled to start with “I know this is going to sound like a pretty sick and weird show, but … ?” No? Seems to happen to me every time.

Tonight was one of those episodes where, if someone I had just introduced to the show started here, they might think, “Well now I know why Keith told me it was pretty sick and weird.” But that’s not to take away from the episode for us fans, of course. To us this was classic bite your nails, holy crap time again.

(Season 3, Episode 4)

Not that you needed any further convincing, but I am officially one effed-up individual. Dexter not only steals most of his proposal from someone else — a crazed killer, no less — but he’s also a serial killer … and I got all choked up at his proposal. What the hell is with that? It’s this damn head cold, I tell ya. Yeah, that’s what it is.

I said last week that I think Ramon is the Dexter to Miguel’s Harry, but in seeing how erratic Ramon acts when his temper is flaring, it’s hard to believe he’d be a killer for long without making major mistakes and getting caught. It’s still on the table as a possibility, as far as I’m concerned.
