Dexter and Harry

From what I’ve heard and read, a lot of writers for movies and television feel that the voicever is a cheap tactic. To have to rely on putting a character’s thoughts out there verbally, rather than via visual cues or good old fashioned acting and writing, is sometimes seen as a cop out. Dexter’s a good example of when a voiceover is not only done well, but it’s essential to the story.

Case in point: Rita taking Dexter’s car keys. Dexter’s outward actions told Rita that she was right and that he felt defeated, handing the keys over because it was “the right thing to do.” Dexter’s head, however, told a different story: use this opportunity to score some points for later, when he really needed “time for himself.” This is just one example of many when the voiceover puts us in a position where we’re not just watching Dexter do what he does, we are Dexter.

John Lithgow on Dexter

I missed out on this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, but I did witness the big presence made by Showtime’s Dexter in 2008 and remember feeling it felt sort of out of place in a convention that’s usually just about science fiction, fantasy and general geekery. Apparently it made enough splash then to have the show return to SDCC’09, as it was there again in full force, this time promoting this upcoming season and, in particular, the role played by guest star John Lithgow.

We got a chance to take a look at the first handful of episodes of Dexter’s fourth season, and let me tell you, the first episode (hell, the first scene) alone is enough to tell you that Lithgow’s Walter Simmons carries a much different sort of dark passenger than Dexter does.

(Season 3, Episode 12 – “Do You Take Dexter Morgan?” – Season Finale)

Well, I was just all kinds of wrong about how this season was going to end. And you know, I’m really glad for that. For the past two seasons I’ve thought this show has been easy to predict, and I just did not see the finale playing out this way at all. However, I wish there was a lot more meat to it, so to speak.

It’s certainly a change of pace to have things end on a rather happy note. Is that what fans of Dexter really want, though? How many of you wanted things to end happily ever after, and how many of you wanted to see a huge shocker of an ending? Does a shock-less finale make for a bad one? I’d say it certainly makes for a forgettable one, in this case.

Dexter – Dexter gets a new best man

(Season 3, Episode 11 – “I Had A Dream”)

First of all, bravo to those who called what was going on with Dexter in the trunk. When I read some people making that guess, I knew it had to be right — it only made sense.

Even for a second-to-last episode, I didn’t see the final events of this one coming so soon. I thought for sure we’d see those … results … come about in the final moments of the finale. For that I’m very happy, as for once things aren’t playing out just as I expected.

I’ve said before that I thought Ramon could be working for Miguel as a killer lap dog, but I wasn’t sure until now that Dexter thought it. I can’t imagine that we’ve heard the end of what Oscar was really doing at Freebo’s place that night, and at the same time we’ll learn a lot more about Ramon and Miguel. In fact, I’d go so far as to say that Miguel was a red herring of a ring-leader all along, and it’s someone else who’s been heading up this army of wackos all along. But who?

(Season 3, Episode 10 – “Go Your Own Way”)

It’s surprising sometimes how similar Deb and Dexter are, even though they’re not blood related. Both of them seem to take asinine risks at the sake of their livelihood, and it’s a miracle they get away with it. Deb screwing around with Anton should easily lead her into serious trouble, but I have a feeling it’ll find its way swept under some rug somewhere. I wouldn’t put it past Quinn to somehow help her out in that area.

Weeks ago I posted a poll asking who everyone thought the Skinner was in this season of Dexter. The odd thing about this killer is that, so far, he’s not proving to be central to the overall plot of the season. The reveal of him being tree-trimmer King was anticlimactic at best. With King now on the loose from the events of last night’s episode, we’re left wondering what his motive really was.

Over in the comments of the TV Squad review of the episode, commenter “Alberto” mentioned an interesting theory: is King working for Miguel? Let’s look at the evidence.

(Season 3, Episode 9 – “About Last Night”)

With only three more episodes left, this one felt a bit like filler to me. We found out for sure who the Skinner is, but how will that be significant to the rest of the season? Will Deb and/or Quinn have to answer for Anton’s C.I. status, or lack thereof?

I forgot until tonight that the Skinner only reared his ugly head because of what Dexter did, killing Freebo; an interesting chain reaction there. How long has King been in this country? Is it only until now that he’s started killing people in Florida?
