Eleven ways Dean Winchester is like Buffy Summers

While I was gleefully devouring all four seasons of Supernatural for my Diary of a Supernatural Virgin column, I couldn’t help but notice all of the similarities between Dean Winchester and my favorite ass-kicking blonde slayer, Buffy Summers. There’s no denying that Eric Kripke owes much to Joss Whedon for paving the way with his ground-breaking iconic series, but I also think he instilled in his hero, Dean, many of the same qualities that make Buffy the well-rounded character that she is.
It even goes beyond qualities and encompasses actual story elements that touched both characters. I’m going out on a limb here and saying that Kripke didn’t borrow without rhyme or reason: I think he paid homage to Whedon in the ways he subtly carved Dean’s complex character to be similar to Buffy’s duality — the lighthearted banter masking the inner angst.
Quotation Marks – Leverage gets the Midwest wrong

I know I’ve professed my love for Leverage in the past (and by the past, I meant, you know, this weekend), but I really was taken aback by the way they portrayed Lincoln, NE. The quotes were funny, yes, but having lived in Omaha, its not that backwards. Oh, and for the record, I LOVE chicken fried steak, especially because it’s more of a Southern thing, and I can’t stand pork rinds. Also, this week Brett took a look at the “missing” episode of Dollhouse, and we, of course, dove into the Virgin Diaries.
“My T.I.R.D. meter is going wild!” – The Drech-man

Quotations Marks – Neil Patrick Harris had some practice….

We start this week with a quote of one of my favorite actors working today….
Neil Patrick Harris on hosting this year’s Emmy ceremony: “I’m looking forward to the challenge of the show — adding my own voice to it, while honoring the nominees and the entire year in television. But which voice to choose? I’m torn between gangsta, foppish Brit, and robot. Really proud of my robot.”
Quotations Marks – Keith and Veronica Mars banter like rock stars

I do have to admit. I’m a bit jealous Bob. I’ve been a Veronica Mars fan for day one, so its definitely one of those shows that I wish I could go back and watch fresh. One of the best parts of putting together this post is getting to cull through quotes from the Virgin Diary reviews, and Veronica Mars is always one of the best reads.
Better Off Ted
“A machine that causes vomiting… that could have all kinds of applications for the military… and fashion modeling.” – Ted
The Colbert Report
“I also express anger through cheering and applause. It’s like my left hand is Al Franken and my right hand keeps slapping him.” – Stephen Colbert
Quotations Marks – The one where we take a break from the reality that was this week

I couldn’t help but use this image from last week’s True Blood of Lafayette’s ‘visit’ to the office at Fangtasia, as the scene, and the quote, was probably the funniest moment on television this week. He has got to be one of the most quotable characters on the air today; I’m sure he’ll continue to show up in this column week after week.
“So if I’ve got even a ‘Jew at an Al-Qaeda Pep rally’ shot at getting my black ass up out of this mother fucker, I’m taking it.”
- Lafayette
“When it comes to men, I’ve got a long history of putting the cart so far out in front that the horse can’t see it, so now I”m just trying to get it right.”
- Tara
Quotation Marks – This week we bring the funny

Here is the latest edition of the week in quotes. Fortunately for us all, we had some new TV this week to pull from. I also, for better or for worse, went a little crazy with the Virgin Diaries (Damn yous, wikiquote.org). Most of the quotes I pulled from the old episodes this week were quirky and funny, so I hope you enjoy!
“Loving Michael is like trench warfare.” – Maddie
“Human instincts can jeopardize a mission. Sometimes its better to let a guy bleed a while.” – Mike’s narration
Supernatural – Sam’s dark side just keep’s growing, and what does Castiel have up his sleeve?

Well it seems that during his off-camera time with Ruby, Sam has been working hard on honing his telekinetic demon-exorcising powers, and tonight we saw the payoff in a big, creepy way. No more nosebleeds and headaches for Sammy, no sir. And now he’s doing some Sylar-esque people flinging as well. Did I mention it was creepy? Poor Dean was a little too unconscious to see it, so of course Sam lied about it later.
At the very least, Dean is starting to bring it out into the open more often. We saw he’s still hurt by what Sam said to him when they were both under the siren’s spell, and Sam is still brushing it off. Read the rest of this entry »
