Cougar Town

The best part about Cougar Town is not Jules and her dating problems. Don’t get me wrong, we get some great lines because of it — “I had to sex away his tears” –  but I’m really digging the men on this show. OK wait, the sucking on chocolate for three seconds was pretty classic too. Back to the men….

I started off adoring Travis and the relationship he has with his mom. Then, I appreciated Grayson for all that he was: cold yet sensitive, snarky and unavailable. “Please stop coming to my bar.” That pretty much sums it up.

Tonight, Bobby stole the show for me, with his honesty, the way he can just be who he is without worrying about what other people think, and the way he is clearly still in love with Jules.

Cougar Town

Good times, laughing at the expense of others. And by others, I definitely mean Cougar Town’s Jules, played by Courteney Cox. Every time she sticks her foot in her mouth, it’s pure comedic gold, and brings on the funny from other characters as well.

In last night’s episode, we saw Jules stick it, and Grayson rose to the occasion. I adored seeing his sensitive side, and the way he revealed it so reluctantly, and it balanced out the hi-jinks of the rest of the episode. Cougar Town makes sure it’s characters have heart and stay likable, as goofy as they may be.

Onto the foibles:

“You can’t use the same person for both things. One’s a gardener and the other’s an artist.” – on waxing eyebrows and the bikini area

There was a lot to appreciate about last night’s Cougar Town. From the shout-out to The Clash, to the high-pitched voice of the man-lie (both from Travis and Josh), I laughed a lot. But for me, Courteney Cox didn’t steal the show last night — last night, it was all about the boys.

“You know, people can’t unhear the things you say.” – Grayson to Jules

I would be the last person to call myself a fan of Beyonce’s (although Destiny’s Child’s version of the Bee Gee’s “Emotion” is stellar), yet I find myself giddy that her song “Single Ladies” is being used in some of my favorite new shows in such a fun way.

A few weeks ago, we heard “Single Ladies” on the football field over at Glee headquarters, with Kurt kicking to it and the rest of the team confusing its opponents with their joyful dance during the game. Yeah, it was a little hokey but so cute and the absolutely perfect song to accompany the antics.

Cougar Town has been criticized for being demeaning to women and simply a tasteless flaunting of cougar sex. There is that, though it is done with such humor and respect that it isn’t offensive to me. That’s also not what this show is really about. The interactions between the quirky characters are what carries the show, and my favorite is the interplay between Jules and her son, Travis.

Let’s explore….

Friends – CliqueClack Flashback

Friends series finale full cast

We all have friends. We know what that’s all about. But, Friends? I’m willing to bet that not many of us have cliques quite like them. Incestual dating? Marriage? Plus, non-twin siblings in the same group? College roommate this and former-homeless that? Safe to say that our friends on Friends were an unusual bunch. And, you know what? That’s why the show worked.

Even for those of you who have, or are, living this life, there was nothing “been there” about this simple premise. Particularly not for me, as I started dating my wife before you could include the word “teen” in our ages. And yet, in the age of Seinfeld, and post-Cheers, Friends was a wild success that you can’t escape from even now, five years after they said goodnight. Why? It’s all about the characters. And the jokes! Read the rest of this entry »
