The trials of funny girls

funnygirls

When I ask people to describe my personality for various reasons – curiosity, recommendations for a job or school, ego boosts on crappy days, et cetera – generally one of the first things that comes up is usually either “good sense of humor” or “funny”. And I like it that way. I like it better than the other most common adjective (”smart”), and way, way better than the third place adjective (”stubborn”).

For a long time, I’ve very seriously considered writing for or about TV professionally, more specifically – for comedic TV (because I hate the word “sitcom” – it implies a laugh track, and laugh tracks and I have a long-standing grudge match). I have always thought that what would hold me back from such aspirations would be either numbers (there are simply so many people who want to do what I want to do) or location (you’ll pry me away from Boston over my cold, dead body). modern family cast

I really, really loathe most family sitcoms. I’m on board with the According to Jim haters’ club we’ve got going on CliqueClack (although now that it’s canceled, there goes the fun), and let’s just say that I’ve never even watched an episode of … wait — are there even any family sitcoms on anymore? Regardless….

I completely adore the pilot of Modern Family. I even watched it twice and would gladly go again, and I almost never do that. I’d actually hesitate to even call Modern Family a sitcom. In fact, I think there’s a whole lot of spoofing going on, which makes me adore it even more.

Last year Seth MacFarlane debuted a slew of webisodes on YouTube called his “Cavalcade of Cartoon Comedy,” made up of short videos with many of the same voices and animation styles you’d find in hist much more popular show, Family Guy. Put all together, it reminded me of the shorts Robot Chicken produces, only in animated form.

Recently an “uncensored” DVD containing all of the webisodes was released (we had a giveaway for some copies not long ago), and I got a chance to give it a watch. I only caught a few of the videos up on YouTube, so it was great to get to see them all together in one sitting.

Holy fuckballs, I love Kathy Griffin

Julia Hass on April 22nd, 2009 4:00 PM

So I happen to really love Kathy Griffin.kathygriffin_cutabitch_new1

Look, it’s not just a redhead solidarity thing, okay? There’s a good reason why I find her, her plastic surgery, her bad haircut and eight pounds of extensions, and her crass non-humorous humor delightful, and it’s a good reason. And that reason? Is because I’m a girl.

I don’t know what it is, exactly, about Kathy Griffin that makes her so unappealing to men (well, the stereotypically straight ones, anyways). Maybe it’s the gossip-mongering. Maybe it’s the campy in-jokes. But whatever it is, I can watch her stand-up for hours, but my brother takes one look at her face on-screen and runs up to his room like a bat out of hell.

I personally don’t know what there is not to love. She’s crass, bold, and totally crazy. She tells Jesus to suck it on national television after winning an Emmy! She hits on Anderson Cooper on-air! Who doesn’t want to hit shamelessly on Anderson Cooper on-air?

Wait, I may have touched on something there.

Neil Patrick HarrisNo Doogie Howser, MD (the show, not the unfortunately named city in Maryland) fan in their right mind would have ever expected Neil Patrick Harris to become one of the funniest people on television in the late 2000s. In fact, NPH’s dead-on timing is the only reason why I tune into the tragically mediocre How I Met Your Mother (yeah, hardcore fans, I went there).

He also has the ability to instantly woo women and men alike, which automatically makes him the most powerful man in show business right now (you may not have noticed, but your pants actually removed themselves during the course of this paragraph). It looks like Saturday Night Live is next in line to get the goods when it returns on January 10th for its first 2009 show, because NPH is finally hosting.

The Soup on E!

If you’re into pop culture, movies, reality television — you know, the finer things in life — then The Soup on E is a show you just can’t pass up! Joel McHale hosts the show with a delicious touch of evil mockery and a fine sense of comedic timing. After all, if we as a society cannot laugh at ourselves and what interests us, how can we be expected to rule the world? The squirrels might as well take over. They have no sense of humor, you know.

I know we’ve got more than a few Adult Swim fans who visit CliqueClack daily, so this DVD set should interest you guys. This week we’re giving away a copy of Aqua Teen Hunger Force – Volume 6 to three lucky, random commenters to this post. Just tell us why you’d like to own this DVD set. The title is available in stores starting tomorrow, December 16.

I particularly like the box cover art for this title. Has a very retro-arcade game look to it.
