True Blood – A tale of two stories

True Blood the Drink

(Season Two, Episode Eight)

Over the course of the first half of the season, True Blood has slowly diverged into two separate stories: one based in Dallas, and one in Bon Temps. While everyone (including myself) has been talking about how well the show has been doing, tonight’s episode put a very fine point on how one of these stories is significantly more interesting than the other.

Put simply, I’ve completely lost any interest in the Bon Temps storyline. The only thing that Maryann has brought to our favorite little Louisiana hamlet is a confusing, sleep inducing storyline. Sam in jail, Andy gone crazy, and Tara … well, Tara is a castrated version of the character we got to know last season.

There were two epicenters to the craziness that was this week’s episode of True Blood: MaryAnn’s latest orgy going bad quick, and the shenanigans at the Church of the Fellowship of the Sun. To me, however, the stories at the Texas church continue to be considerably more engaging than whatever jacked up agenda the newly identified MaryAnn has.

Steve Newlin is much more of a mastermind than I gave him credit for (Side Note #1: more of doesn’t not mean an actual mastermind). Between having a mole inside the vampires, and whatever he did to both get, and keep, Godric in the basement, the man is a player, even if he does come across as an idiot.

True Blood has been hitting on all cylinders this entire season. Bill has finally woken up from his coma, Jason is getting himself into all sorts of trouble, and we are finally getting into the vampire mythology outside of Bon Temps. Oh, and Lafayette…. You’ve got to love Lafayette.

I do have to admit I’m growing a little tired of the Maryann storyline. It’s a damn shame too, because I love Michelle Forbes. And, let’s be honest: who doesn’t like a magic infused orgy? Or even better, one like every week? Read the rest of this entry »

(Season Two, Episode Five)

It’s all about the relationships tonight. From the inappropriate (yet irresistible) to the epic to the downright cute, we saw a variety of couples on display tonight. Most of the pairings are working pretty well. It’s nice to see some people that you never thought would form any romantic relationships on the show making things work.

Lafayette and Eric

(Season Two, Episode Four)

Since the beginning of the series, I have held that there is one central problem with True Blood, and since I’ve begun reviewing the show this season, I’ve shared this opinion (again, and again, and again): Bill Compton is a singularly boring character, with no discernible personality. What I think, however, is that I haven’t given credit to the gradual influence that his relationship with Sookie has had. Now that Jessica is involved, however, they’ve thrown gradual out the window, because Bill was out of his comfort zone this week, and it was a very good thing.

“Scratches” (Season 2, Episode 3)

I spent most of last week talking about how boring I find Bill, and how much I love Lafayette. I think what it goes to show is that as much as I like this show, it’s less for the main relationship as it is for all the relationships between the secondary characters (Though I still love Anna Paquin’s Sookie Stackhouse … As Jane said over at TV Squad, “She’s got spunk.”). Producer Alan Ball has done a excellent job crafting these characters and putting them in interesting situations.
