Ratings Clack – Finale bonanza

The 2008-2009 television season is quickly coming to a close. Last week saw some 30 season/series finales hitting our screens. The resulting numbers were all over the place. Some shows took advantage of the situation, pulling out all the stops and hitting numbers they hadn’t seen in some time. Others held steady. And a few signed in with troubling drops.
I’ve mentioned before that these final numbers could hold sway as the networks prepare to release the fall schedules this week. That does still apply, although, after all the shenanigans over the weekend, with Dollhouse and Better Off Ted being renewed, just how much sway becomes a little more cloudy. See Jane Clack – Harvey Birdman, Joan Rivers and Private Practice
This week has me clacking about Harvey Birdman, Joan Rivers’ freakish face, and that massive shark-jumper, Private Practice. Read on….
Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law. I’m not sure where I was when this show aired during its four-season run, but we’ve been watching it on DVD and it’s a hoot. We’re just into season one, and my favorite episodes are the “Bannon Custody Case” (Race Bannon and Dr. Quest battle in court to see who gets custody of Johnny and Hadji), and “The Dabba Don.” The opening of that episode with Fred Flintstone driving through Bedrock to The Sopranos theme song is pure genius. Anyone else a Harvey Birdman fan? Ha HA!
Ratings Clack – Good news for Castle, not so much for Dollhouse

We’re on the verge of it now. Over the next two weeks all of our favorite shows are going to be ending, and some of those tough decisions will have to be made by the networks. These final few ratings numbers will play heavily in those decisions. With that in mind, the week brought good news for a couple of bubble shows (Castle, Lie To Me), and bad news for others (Better Off Ted, Cupid, The Unusuals, Dollhouse, Reaper, My Name Is Earl). Oh no! Some of my favorite shows are just about done for the season and some are already history. The Celebrity Apprentice and The Amazing Race both wrapped up last night, and it’s not long to go for other shows on my “must see TV” list. American Idol is down to the final three. Yikes! How fast time flies!
Of course, the end of these shows only means that other shows I enjoy aren’t too far in the future — So You Think You Can Dance and Big Brother (my summer guilty pleasure) will be coming along soon. Usually I run a week behind reporting on the shows which air on Sunday nights. However, due to the season finales, please be warned that there will be finale show spoilers for both The Amazing Race and The Celebrity Apprentice after the jump.
Reality Clack – American Idol, The Celebrity Apprentice, Survivor, Dancing With the Stars
Thankfully, my life isn’t quite like reality television. I don’t know if I could handle all the drama! On The Celebrity Apprentice, Joan Rivers packed her bags, had a thorny snit over Trump firing her daughter, and took off after slamming some of the others. Over on American Idol, there was a shocker in the bottom three this past week.
As we head towards the season finales of all the current reality shows, things are heating up. That includes tempers, strategies, alliances and, need we forget … song choices are more important than ever. After all, I never leave my house without the perfect song in mind to start off my day. Um … today? “Rainy Days and Mondays.”
Ratings Clack – Crazy schedules and a Thursday where everyone loses

Last week was a bit of an odd one for programming as the networks went a bit experimental. Over at FOX, Bones tried its third night in a week. On ABC, The Unusuals took over for Cupid and someone gave the OK for another Lost clip show. CBS continued the shuffling of their procedurals by bumping NCIS, The Mentalist, and Criminal Minds back an hour. The results, as you might have suspected, were varied. While a lot of that was strange, the biggest surprise of the week was Thursday, which found just about everything taking a hit in the ratings. In other news, According To Jim still stinks out loud. Reality Clack – Survivor, American Idol, Dancing With the Stars, The Amazing Race
What a time it is for reality television fans! I think this week’s Tribal Council on Survivor had to be one of the best and most entertaining ever on the show. Sure, I enjoy blindsides on the show. But this one was a humdinger and a true blindside of someone I so wanted gone.
Two of the contestants went home on American Idol; another star got the boot on Dancing With the Stars. Some years back, folks getting eliminated wouldn’t bring about much press unless JR got shot or something. But times have changed. Some years ago, we would shy away from someone angrily talking to himself on the street. Now we know they’re using a Bluetooth and they’re not really loony. Well, not about talking to themselves anyway.
