Virtuality: Great concept, but does it deliver? – CliqueClack Preview

As the huge Battlestar Galactica fanatic that I am, I have been looking forward to Ronald D. Moore’s next television projects, Caprica and Virtuality for quite some time. Both have had a rocky pre-production time period, but Caprica is set to premiere in January of next year. Things aren’t looking as good for Virtuality, however.
The show is set up at FOX, but it does not look like it will be taken to series. The network will be airing the two hour pilot on Friday, June 26th, but unless the airing does some killer ratings, a series pick up is doubtful. Moore, in a recent conference call, said they haven’t ruled out continuing the story in other mediums, but is waiting to see what happens next week. After taking a look at the pilot recently, I’m not as hopeful as I once was.
Jane Espenson on Buffy’s Oz, Warehouse 13, Caprica and Dollhouse
It seems anywhere I turn these days, Jane Espenson has some hand in many things TV-related that I love. I was turned on to her writing magic with Buffy the Vampire Slayer, of course, but it hasn’t ended there. Battlestar Galactica fans no doubt know of her involvement with that series, and it’s continuing on with the Caprica prequel series, for example.
Once again I grabbed the ear … well, the typing fingers of Ms. Espenson to ask some burning questions I had about some new projects she’s been involved in. As it turns out, fans of hers have a lot to look forward to.
What did you think of Caprica?

As I mentioned earlier this week, the Caprica movie/pilot was released on DVD and online download this past Tuesday. Surely by now at least several of you have seen it, and I’d really like to know what you thought. Did it meet or beat your expectations? Was it a complete waste of time? Are you anxious to watch the rest of the series?
I won’t go into my own thoughts too much here, as I did that in my preview post. However, I will mention a few aspects of it below that I didn’t want to spoil before, but will now since you can readily get it yourself.
Caprica is much better than I expected – CliqueClack Preview

Since Battlestar Galactica ended, many fans have wondered what to look forward to next. Most of us have known about the upcoming prequel series, Caprica, for some time now (guest clacker Ivey West did a pilot script review for us in January, in fact.) However, the previews for the pilot movie — which is available for purchase in stores and online tomorrow — have left a lot of us underexcited, to say the least. Described as “television’s first science fiction family saga,” it appeared as quite a departure from the deep themes and amazing action sequences of Galactica. In short, it really didn’t appear as something that would interest me, even if it had something to do with a series I loved.
I got an early copy of the direct-to-DVD Caprica “movie” last week, which is essentially the pilot episode, or at least whatever they deem the first 90 minutes of the series to be when it premieres next year. Unlike with any BSG DVDs I got ahead of time in the past, I actually sat on watching this one for a couple of days — that should give you some indication of my lack of excitement for the show at that point. However, now that I’ve actually watched it, I can say I was pleasantly surprised.
Caprica, the pilot movie – CliqueClack Giveaway
It doesn’t seem that long ago that Battlestar Galactica ended its final season. Personally I’m happy the show ended when it did. As far as the way it ended … well, we won’t get into that again here.
Galactica fans have been aware of the upcoming prequel series, Caprica, for some time now. The 90-minute pilot movie releases tomorrow, April 21st, on both digital download and DVD; I’ll actually have a review of it up later today. On behalf of Universal Home Entertainment, we’re giving away two copies of the DVD to random commenters of this post. Just tell us why you want to own the DVD — simple as that!
Theory 39,516 on what Battlestar Galactica was all about

Like many of you who watched the series finale of Battlestar Galactica, I’ve had a chance to chew on, swallow, regurgitate, and chew again the events that took place during those two hours. And, like you, I’ve read numerous opinions as to what bit Ron D. Moore was trying to portray with his science fiction opera. There are many theories: it was a story about God and the Devil; or a journey similar to that of Moses and his disciples; or a bad practical joke played on Al by Ziggy and Sam Beckett. Needless to say, there isn’t one true answer to what it was all about.
Except for mine, of course. After drinking several cans of Red Bull I had an epiphany as to what the underlying theme of BSG was all about: redemption.
Frakkin’ Clack – Caprica starts on DVD, a promo video and podcast delays
Ever since hearing about the premise for the Battlestar Galactica prequel series, Caprica, I’ve been rather uninterested in it. From what I can tell so far, and from the few short promos I’ve seen, Caprica’s aiming at a different audience than BSG’s. Sure, they hope to pull in as many die-hards as they can, but even Moore himself has said you can go into this show without having ever seen Galactica and not get lost. A smart move at attracting new viewers, but it remains to be seen if it’ll retain the loyalty of current BSG fans.
To possibly help ease BSG fans into the idea of Caprica, the pilot “movie” will be released on DVD before airs on TV. Clearly this move isn’t meant to attract newcomers to the BSG universe — who not familiar with Battlestar Galactica would grab this DVD? It comes out this April, well before the series is set to debut next year. I’ll be sure to get a copy to check out and post about here.
