smallville bulletproof

Not only is Burn Notice new tonight, but ABC is airing the last two episodes of Samantha Who?, so you should really be watching that. However, if you just need more, here are some of tonight’s reruns:

  • In case you missed it the first time around, the newest Lindsay Lohan opus, Labor Pains, is re-airing at 8:00, on ABC Family. Remember when she was good in The Parent Trap? And Freaky Friday? And Mean Girls? Sigh.
  • Also at 8:00, Clark goes undercover as a cop to find out who shot Tom Jones on Smallville, in “Bulletproof.”
  • NBC is playing The Office and 30 Rock from 8-10 again, but at 9:30, 30 Rock is airing “The Bubble,” in which Jon Hamm (sadly) finishes his arc playing Liz’s boyfriend.
  • At 10:00, CBS is showing an episode of The Mentalist that I may be checking out myself, since I haven’t seen it before. In “The Thin Red Line,” Jane and the CBI crew investigate the murder of a witness in a drug case.
  • If that isn’t your cup of tea, and you hate yourself, you can always watch Private Practice, wherein they discuss gender reassignment surgery in babies. Ugh.

burn notice-comrades

(Season 2, Episodes 4-6)

I understand that they need the “who burned Michael” storyline to last throughout the season, but I still thought we’d be getting a little more than what they’re giving us. Carla hasn’t even shown up in this batch of episodes, although in #6, she has Michael working for her again. They’re definitely leaving me wanting more after this group of episodes, but if they’re not careful, they’re going to leave me wanting anything, and then getting bored and not caring anymore.

(Season 2, Episode 4 “Comrades”)

Two episodes in a row with no Carla. This time, Sam’s on the case. Carla’s cover is an agriculture job, so Sam goes undercover to try to find out more information. He doesn’t achieve much, other than a raging hangover, but at the end of the episode he manages to extract a tiny bit of information: a P.O. box. Michael and Fiona go to stake it out, but I can’t imagine Carla checks her own mail, so even if they find out who does, it’s going to be a while before this little bit of information actually leads anywhere.

1×01 “Pilot”

“When you fight, you have to be careful not to break the little bones in your hand on someone’s face.” – Michael

It’s lines like this that make me think I’m going to like this series. I’m not sure why, but I kind of expected the first season of Burn Notice to look like crap, production value-wise. Maybe it’s because I spent so much time watching the sadly filmed The Dead Zone, but I thought there would be way more obvious-looking sets. Burn Notice, however, looks pretty slick.

Neil Patrick HarrisThe summer season is getting under way now. Here’s a handy guide of what’s to come:

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE WEEK

  • It hasn’t even debuted yet and I’m already annoyed with NBC’s I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here. I say get them all out of there, and off my screen before the two-hour premiere. (Mon. 8pm)
  • But if you can’t get enough of Heidi Montag and Spender Pratt, you can flip over to MTV and see “Speidi’s Wedding Unveiled” in a special presentation of The Hills. (Mon. 11pm)
  • Scare tactics are alive and well on ABC’s Earth 2100, which takes a speculative look at how we might just wipe ourselves out in the next 100 years. It WILL happen. Bob Woodruff says so. (Tue. 9pm)
  • The following night NBC takes us into the Presidency with Inside the Obama White House: Brian Williams Reports. I wonder if he’ll ask how we’re going to avert oblivion in the next century. (Wed. 9pm)
  • Just in time for Land of the Lost, find out how Will Ferrell would really fare in the wild as he takes it on with Bear Grylls in a special Man vs. Wild on Discovery (Tue. 10pm)
  • The NBA Finals kick off with a Jimmy Kimmel special on ABC before the Orlando Magic take on the Los Angeles Lakers. (Thu. 8pm)
  • It’s The Tony Awards in HD for the first time on CBS, and it’s hosted by NPH himself, Neil Patrick Harris! (Sun. 8pm)
  • Worst Week is back to burn off its remaining episodes on CBS (Sat. 8:30pm)

burn-notice-finale

Damn! Where do I start? The season finale of Burn Notice had a little bit of everything: fistfights, car chases, shootouts, multiple explosions and a high body count. Whew! Sounds like a Will Smith action flick, eh? I was beginning to wonder if the writers had it in them to produce an action-packed bloodbath without sacrificing the show’s signature sarcasm. Well, color me impressed, because last night’s season two swan song was – as the kids are fond of saying – the BOMB.

Right off the bat we discover that sultry spook Carla was once burned herself. Really? Now she works for an elusive government group known simply as “management.” That’s just the tip of the iceberg, folks. Turns out Carla is more of a ruthless bitch than we first imagined. In order to recruit Victor into her stable of black ops assassins, she murdered his wife and son and burned him, all in the same day. Quite a gal. Easy to see why Victor wants her six feet under. What wasn’t clear was why Carla was so eager to vanquish Victor. Good ol’ Vic was smarter than I gave him credit for.

Burn Notice – Sci-fi alumni convene

Scott Tunstall on February 27th, 2009 11:00 AM

burnep15It was a cavalcade of guest stars on the second to last episode of Burn Notice’s second season. We learned Michael had a fiancé. Didn’t see that coming (even though I saw the preview last week). You know what I mean. It was the standard Mike helps a client plot, but with an added, and welcome, twist. Frankly, the client sidebars have been a little stale for my taste as of late. It was refreshing to watch Michael aiding his former betrothed, Samantha, who is a professional thief. Did you really think he would fall for a “normal” girl? Of course you didn’t.

Samantha was played by Dina Meyer, the first of three sci-fi vets to grace the episode. You may recognize Dina from Star Trek: Nemesis as Commander Donatra and Starship Troopers (one of my faves) where she portrayed the sexy but tough, Dizzy Flores. This time out there were no spaceships to pilot or “bugs” to kill. Instead, she joined forces with Mike to rescue her son from an “evil son-of-a-bitch” named Brennan. I’ve always been a fan of Meyer; she gets better looking with age. Accompanying her in the evening’s festivities were two more familiar faces from the future fantasy genre. If you’re a loyal Burn Notice viewer, you already know who I’m referring to.

jeffrey donovan michael westenBurn Notice is one of my favorite shows on television right now. And I must not be alone, because this week, Jeffrey Donovan got a handsome raise for his role as Michael Westen. And I mean handsome: his salary more than doubled. Wow. Is any actor really worth a doubled salary?

You can bet that Jeffrey Donovan is, and I’ve got nine reasons to prove it.

1. This is what happens to actors who finally make their mark, and that’s what Donovan has done with Burn Notice. Previously, he’s had a few shots, but mostly just guest spots (and a soap opera). Burn Notice has propelled Donovan to a new level of stardom, and he’s responsible for the success of the series. We’ll all be saying “Remember when Jeffrey Donovan did Burn Notice?” because this is his defining moment.
