BSG: The Plan poster

It’s been about seven months since we’ve seen a new episode of Battlestar Galactica. Sound like a long time? Well, actually, that’s about the same amount of time we had to wait to see the second half of the fourth season after the first half aired, so for BSG fans, this isn’t new. I’m talking, of course, about the upcoming direct-to-DVD (and online video) release of Battlestar Galactica: The Plan.

An official copy of the DVD arrived on my doorstep yesterday, and despite having a buttload of TV to watch, I couldn’t wait to give it a watch. So, here’s an early review of the movie with little to no spoilers, which is an easy task since there’s really nothing shocking or spoiler-worthy to worry about.

Jane EspensonIt seems anywhere I turn these days, Jane Espenson has some hand in many things TV-related that I love. I was turned on to her writing magic with Buffy the Vampire Slayer, of course, but it hasn’t ended there. Battlestar Galactica fans no doubt know of her involvement with that series, and it’s continuing on with the Caprica prequel series, for example.

Once again I grabbed the ear … well, the typing fingers of Ms. Espenson to ask some burning questions I had about some new projects she’s been involved in. As it turns out, fans of hers have a lot to look forward to.

BSG 33

For many … hell, most fans of Battlestar Galactica, the moment the show “Blew the Hatch” was from minute one, during the mini-series. This was the moment that they knew this show was going to be really good and, hopefully, stay just as good. For me, though, the moment BSG blew the hatch was the first episode of the first regular season, titled “33.” The mini-series was really good, mind you, but “33″ was when I knew this show was going to take us for an amazing ride.

Ronald D. MooreIvey West is back Clacking for us again, this time about something he usually has a lot to say about every week, though maybe not so much after next week.

I would love to say that I’ve been a fan of the new Battlestar Galactica from the second the mini-series premiered. Unfortunately, I missed that boat. I did not then (nor now, really) hold the Original Series in that high regard, so I skipped it. However, when the reviews of the British premiere of the series started hitting the interwebs, I decided to get on board. At that point, I was hooked.

The mini-series, and season one, gave us some pretty incredible drama. Roslin’s reluctant acceptance of power, the first “So Say We All” speech, the horror of ‘33,’ Starbuck stranded… (I can keep going on, but I’ll stop) were all very good. As with the original, we were introduced to a society faced with the concept of forging on after an apocalyptic event that which we can’t really fathom. However, the new version was infused with deeper themes of religion and politics, as well as character dynamics that seemed to be more relevant than the plot itself.

Battlestar Galactica hull cracks

I think I need to stop watching Dollhouse before I watch Battlestar Galactica. I get pissed off at having to hear baby Jesus cry at what Fox made Joss do to what just had to be a better show than it is, so then I carry that anger into watching this. So, my apologies if I tend to get ornery at this episode.

That said, I was really getting sick of watching scene after scene of Bill Adama in the dark, watching the ship getting Cylon mud painted on it. Many big-time fans of the show will definitely find these scenes touching and symbolic, as we’re watching Bill nurse his ailing baby while Tigh and Caprica watch after their own. I just found it overkill and obvious filler for an episode that I hoped to be a lot more fulfilling.

“My forebears, on the Centurion side of the family, were the slaves of humanity. And I want justice for that.”
“Ah, lunch has arrived.”

So, is your mind done reeling yet? I know mine’s not. Who would’ve thought that Anders, the person I’d complained all along as being a rather worthless member of the five, would be the one to explain nearly everything having to do with the history behind the five original Cylons, and then the eight they helped create. Yes, we finally got confirmation that there are indeed eight Cylons besides the five, meaning there’s still one left to reveal … possibly.

As for that true, final Cylon — the seventh — if we’re to believe what Anders was saying, his name was Daniel. So we can rule out any of the females as being one of them. Although Ellen said the Number Seven was “permanently” dead, I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that I believe Starbuck could still be this “Daniel,” even though we seem to have been led away from her by what Anders had to say. “What?!” you say. Let me explain.

CapricaEver since hearing about the premise for the Battlestar Galactica prequel series, Caprica, I’ve been rather uninterested in it. From what I can tell so far, and from the few short promos I’ve seen, Caprica’s aiming at a different audience than BSG’s. Sure, they hope to pull in as many die-hards as they can, but even Moore himself has said you can go into this show without having ever seen Galactica and not get lost. A smart move at attracting new viewers, but it remains to be seen if it’ll retain the loyalty of current BSG fans.

To possibly help ease BSG fans into the idea of Caprica, the pilot “movie” will be released on DVD before airs on TV. Clearly this move isn’t meant to attract newcomers to the BSG universe — who not familiar with Battlestar Galactica would grab this DVD? It comes out this April, well before the series is set to debut next year. I’ll be sure to get a copy to check out and post about here.
