TV on DVD for October 27th

With most of the big sets out of the way, our DVD attention now turns toward the older shows. This week does offer a couple of current things from Battlestar Galactica, Adult Swim, and The Secret Saturdays. The real gems, however, come from years gone by. My pick for the week would be the new Collector’s Edition of The Prisoner, but I already have the 40th Anniversary set. If you also find that particular collection checked off on your DVD to-do list, you may be interested in the various selections in the Monty Python section.

With a description like “Adult Swim in a Box”, how can you go wrong? We’ll have a review of this set up as soon as it comes through to CliqueClack HQ (as it hasn’t been released yet — comes out tomorrow!). For those of you who’re screaming “review shmeview — gimme gimme gimme!” we’ve got good news for you: we’re giving away one of these sets to one random commenter to this post!
First of all, what do you get in “Adult Swim in a Box”? Well, you get a box. Venture Bros. – Helper! Kill Hitler!

Over the years, a lot of fans of a lot of shows have lamented the treatment of the object of their affection. People just didn’t get their show. Or it didn’t get the credit it deserved. It was just so much better than the great unwashed masses understood. All of those people should find themselves somewhere behind Venture Bros. fans in that big line looking for recognition. Seriously. Forget cable. Forget animation. This is one of the best shows on all of TV, and it airs at frickin’ midnight. The season four premiere, “Blood of the Father, Heart of Steel”, only served to reinforce that idea. It was better than I could have even expected. Read the rest of this entry »
Tim & Eric Awesome Show, Great Job! – Season 3 DVD review

Oh, Tim and Eric. You assault my brain with such seizure-inducing aggression, I can’t sit through an episode without smelling some hair burning. It’s a good thing I now have the third season on DVD so I can do this at my own pace. And may I suggest that the best way to watch it is really late at night, in a black-hole of a room, with something alcoholic sitting by your side (be it a beer or a tipsy friend). This way, you can wake up several hours later on the couch, with a pouch of sequins inexplicably in your mouth, and a fistful of spaghetti that you don’t remember making, accompanied only by the DVD menu quietly droning through its loop on the screen. I mean, I’m assuming that’s what would happen, anyway. Not like it happened to me. Read the rest of this entry »
Venture Bros. season 4 trailer – You don’t want it, you need it

Those that were fortunate enough to witness the premiere of the Venture Bros. season 4 trailer at Comic-Con are probably still reeling from the impact. Home viewers, the trailer is finally online, and you have the benefit of seeing it on a small screen, lessening the chances of overdosing on awesome. Plus, there’s been some exciting news from the creators, Jackson Publick and Doc Hammer.
What’s better for Wesley Crusher: Assrape or Snirkles?

I don’t normally catch Robot Chicken, but since it was airing a new episode last night and I was still riding the high from their awesome Star Wars: Episode II DVD (giveaway in progress until this Wednesday!), I flipped it on. Then there was a skit that I was really, really shocked I’d never heard of before, especially from Wil Wheaton via Twitter. In this skit, the writing for the third season of Star Trek: The Next Generation is about to begin, and they acknowledge the fan backlash over Wil’s character, Wesley Crusher. How to “fix” the problem? Well, you just go and watch and find out.
The Venture Bros. Season 3 – CliqueClack Review

Boom! Yummy. Yet another great DVD from The Venture Bros. On a scale from “1″ to “Awesome,” I can confidently rate this collection “Swinging Cartoon Penis,” because that’s pretty much all you’re going to remember after watching this.
All right, let me just talk about this and get it out of the way. There were a few times while watching the uncensored DVDs that I actually threw my hands towards the screen and half-laughed, half-screamed, “Why!?,” startling everyone around me. Have you ever wondered what super-old Colonel Gentleman or terribly calloused Ned look like without pants? Well, you’re going to find out, whether you like it or not. The language is also uncensored, but you’re probably going to be too distracted by the unnecessary views of balls from behind to notice. Those Korean animators love detail.
