Oh, how I’ll miss my weekly dose of Banks and Delahoy. I really don’t understand why The Unusuals didn’t make it to season two. All about the numbers game, I suppose.

At any rate, I’ll just take this opportunity to say that I loved the show, loved all the characters, and will miss it. Since we won’t have another episode, rather than talk about the guy who broke into apartments making porn movies, or Shraeger and Walsh’s conversation about her being a “she-male,” I’ll just use this wrap-up post for a few of the great quotes in the final episode:

“Wanna do the ostrich?” – Shraeger, approaching a suspect
“No, let’s do the frisky beaver.” – Walsh

“So, we get to spend all day and night watching porn. We’ve been preparing for this moment since the day we were 13.” – Delahoy
“What? I don’t wanna watch porn without you.” – Banks
“That is maybe the gayest thing you’ve ever said to me, in a long list of gay things you’ve said.” – Delahoy

I’m really not that big on cop shows. I guess maybe NYPD Blue was the last one I watched on a regular basis. But The Unusuals was really starting to grow on me.

I liked the goofy characters, each with their own issues. I liked the music and the cases each week, especially things like “the murder store.” Banks and Delahoy were headed for pop culture stardom, but now that dream’s been cut horribly short.

Dear television watchers who panned The Unusuals,

I am outraged! The greatest new show on television delivers less than a dozen episodes and then craps out on us. Or, rather, has the rug pulled out from under it by ABC. What the hell have you done?

I know that tastes are subjective, but how much more enjoyable can a show get? The Unusuals has a little bit for everyone. The cop drama is about as good, clean, and digestible as any other similar show out there. And the comedy can stand toe-to-toe with the best of them. Not to mention the fact that the stories never lag, the pace is just right to keep things interesting and still keep viewers involved, and the talent is off the charts. To name just a few: Amber Tamblyn (Joan of Arcadia), Jeremy Renner (S.W.A.T., amongst other movies), Adam Goldberg (yes, that one), Harold Perrineau (Lost), and Terry Kinney (Oz), all provide intriguing characters who are immensely enjoyable and watchable. This week’s episode didn’t thrill me as much as the one with Banks and Delahoy in the murder store, but it was still good. The story with Banks being “dead” gave me a little start, but I figured they wouldn’t kill off a main character so early in the series — and Lord help us if they do and he comes back as a ghost. I wasn’t into the Izzie ghost story on Grey’s Anatomy, and I’m not into it here either. And speaking of that…

Must we have a bunch of hallucinations from Delahoy and his brain tumor? I’m already bored with the story about him seeing his high school girlfriend at every turn. Though I did like it when he threatened the medical examiner with turning her in (for not ID’ing the fake Banks) to get her to examine him. Then when he flinched when she drew blood, she told him, “Stop being a girl.” This relationship might actually go somewhere.

unusuals_banks_harold_perrineau_no_42Well, crap. Just when I was thinking Banks had a whole new life ahead of him — free from germ phobias and fear of dying and kissing girls — the damn psychic died on the bus just like she said she would.

I mean, let’s face it. It was pretty freaky when she stared into Banks’ eyes and asked if the number 42 meant anything to him. And it keeps popping up everywhere! You’ve gotta wonder if it’s just because he’s looking for the number 42 that he starts to notice it everywhere. Still, it IS freaky that it’s EVERYWHERE! $42.42 on the cash register, 4th Street and 2nd Avenue, 42 passengers on the bus….

And the psychic’s  cryptic words to Banks: “Trying to cheat your own destiny is as pointless as wearing a bulletproof vest.” Yikes.

So, the Frank Lutz/Henry Cole storyline came to an interesting conclusion. I like that they didn’t drag it out forever into infinity, but the way it played out this week made for much better storytelling and opened the possibility for conflict in the future.

I’ve been wondering if Walsh made the right decision by not turning Cole in for all his past crimes and recent involvement with Lutz. But because Cole was willing to do the right thing — turn Lutz in and go down with him — I think that made Walsh go, OK, this guy really IS trying to do the right thing and be a better person.

Relativity – CliqueClack Flashback

Jane Boursaw on April 30th, 2009 12:30 PM

relativity_kimberly_williamsRelativity is a little TV series that aired for just one season in 1996-1997. But I glommed onto it, and the show earned an Emmy nod, as well as two other industry awards. If they had just given it another season, the show might have endured for years.

For starters, it was helmed by Edward Zwick and Marshall Herskovitz, longtime producing partners who also helmed thirtysomething, My So-Called Life, and Once and Again, not to mention the more recent Quarterlife. Did people just get tired of relationship shows? I don’t know, but I wish Relativity had stuck around longer, because I really liked it.
