90210-teegardenOh, Aimee Teegarden. We’ve fallen in love with you as the sweet, shy Julie Taylor on Friday Night Lights. But now you’re doing a guest stint on 90210, and while you look like the same Coach’s daughter we’ve know and love, this character is a little bit… different. I mean, bitch is crazy, right?

When Teegarden appeared in last week’s Adrianna-centric episode as Rhonda, the fellow West Beverly student who Ethan hit with his car, she seemed like a dorkier version of Julie Taylor. Teegarden herself describes Rhonda as a “band geek,” but I really think there’s more going on. Rhonda is clearly using whatever she can in order to win Ethan’s affection, and I don’t think her machinations stopped with just exaggerating her injuries.

90210

(Season 1, Episode 14 – “By Accident”)

I call bullshit on this entire episode. Yes, I know that this is a teen drama, and not a particularly good one at that, and with teen dramas, especially ones that aren’t particularly good, there is a need for suspension of disbelief. But come on. Adrianna’s entire pregnancy storyline is completely ridiculous.

I find it interesting that people can always talk about getting abortions on TV and in the movies, but when it comes time to actually go through with it, they find that they just can’t. Fine. I can buy that. But when Adrianna tells Naomi that she can’t have an abortion because she’s too far along and that it’s illegal, that’s where I draw the line.

(Season 1, Episode 12 – “Hello, Goodbye, Amen”) 90210 - 90210, Season 1 - Hello, Goodbye, Amen

90210 has been off the air for so long that if it weren’t for the fact that I review it, I probably would have forgotten about its existence. While we don’t exactly pick up where we left off, we may as well have, because nothing has actually changed for any of the characters. Naomi and Annie are still fighting, Silver is still jealous of the cheerleader who hangs all over Dixon, Kelly still can’t figure out why Brenda is being such a bitch, and Josh Henderson continues to have the worst generic TV Southern accent ever.

In all, I thought this episode was okay. I run hot and cold on this show and I’ve had a hard time putting a finger on exactly what my problem with it is, but I think this week I finally figured it out.

(Season 1, Episode 11 – “That Which We Destroy”)

I’m still really annoyed by the way they’re treating the Naomi character. They’ve made her into a completely boring Mean Girl and took away all depth and substance, or anything else that made her interesting to watch. Instead, they’ve reduced her to nothing more than a foil for Annie’s scrunchy-faced happiness with DJ Hair Plugs.

While Naomi may be the one who’s supposed to be “evil,” the things she does are just kind of… pedestrian. I admit, trying to ruin Annie’s birthday last week was bad,  but this week, the best she can do is, “enjoy my sloppy seconds?” Come on. That’s not going to send anyone into lifelong therapy.

90210 – Games People Play

Kona Gallagher on November 12th, 2008 12:50 PM

(Season 1, Episode 10)

Jaimie Trueblood/CW

Jaimie Trueblood/CW

Here’s the thing about games people play: holy crap, they are boring. I have such a weird relationship with this show. Last week, I was talking about how I was really starting to like it, but this week… ugh. There was absolutely nothing going on.

The writers continued to make Naomi absolutely schizophrenic, and it was super annoying. After spending weeks establishing that she’s a basically nice girl who’s going through a rough time, they decide to make her into a low-rent Blair Waldorf– and it doesn’t work. No one can out-bitch or out-scheme Blair, and anyone who tries just ends up looking pretty foolish.
