Ratings Clack – The Grammy Awards beat Idol

American Idol has become such a ratings juggernaut that it’s always a little surprising when something actually tops it. The Grammy Awards were able to do just that last week, thanks to the best ratings for the show since 2004. The other big event for the week was the return of Lost on ABC. It didn’t approach the Idol or Grammy numbers, but it did finish the week as the number one scripted show in the adult demo. Granted, it was the season premiere, but knocking off Grey’s, House, 2 ½ Men, and Big Bang Theory is always worth noting. On cable, the big surprise was probably the performance from USA’s White Collar and Psych. Both were well down from last week. Read the rest of this entry »
Supernatural: What will make Sam and Dean say yes?

Where do they go from here? I can’t even begin to imagine what the big Sam / Dean showdown on Supernatural is going to look like, when we finally get there, but one thing’s for sure, as Brett said — it’s going to happen, somehow. What will drive both of them to say yes to Michael and Lucifer, to be their vessels? Let’s take a look at what we know and see if we can make some educated guesses.
Dean’s fighting fate pretty hard, yet in this most recent episode, Archangel Michael tells him that free will, well, isn’t. No matter what choices Dean makes, they will all lead him to the same place, and that’s to be archangel Michael’s condom. We’re also going to find out a bit more about the relationship between Dean and Michael in the 100th episode of Supernatural, coming up this spring.
Supernatural – Six degrees of Heaven Bacon

Finally, after all that waiting, “The Song Remains The Same” got us back to the big story. Not that I’m complaining about the episodes we’ve seen since the show returned from the holiday break. They’ve been great. But this is what I’ve been waiting for, and it really lived up to the hype. Old friends, and enemies, returned as we caught up with Castiel, Anna, and Uriel. We got to revisit the ’70s and check in on how things are going for young John and Mary. And, oh yeah… we met that other guy for the first time too… That’s kind of a big deal. We should probably talk about that after the jump. Read the rest of this entry »
Ratings Clack – Everybody loves football, and Bones

It was a bit of a slow week of television. Football on FOX sent all the other networks scrambling on Sunday. Then Obama took over all the channels on Wednesday. Add in an oddly quiet Thursday and we had three pretty weak nights of numbers. Not to worry though, there was still the occasional cause for celebration. To call the NFC Championship a success would be a terrible understatement. How terrible? How about it more than doubled the Idol numbers? In non-gridiron results, FOX took advantage of the quiet Thursday, garnering some very good results for Bones and Fringe. Castle managed to grow their numbers again. And Vampire Diaries tied for second in the demo! Read the rest of this entry »
Supernatural – Dude … that was sweet

I hate to sound like a broken record, but I have to say it again. One of the great strengths of the team down at Supernatural HQ is how well they do comedy. Not just how well they do it, but how well they mix it in with the more serious parts of the story. “Meat Swap” was yet another in the ever growing list of episodes that take full advantage of those abilities. We had a very cool story that reminded us of the situation the boys find themselves in, while offering up a whole bag of funny bits. And since I’m already repeating myself, I’ll just add one more time: “Best show on television.” Read the rest of this entry »
Ratings Clack – Heroes: Sack The Cheerleader… Save The Network?

The complete implosion of Heroes just never gets old. I’m fascinated by it, and the show found an all new low last week. Over the years we’ve seen plenty of shows fall from their once lofty heights. But to see one crash so fast, and in such a dramatic fashion, is a rare thing. On a brighter note, the week that was also brought a host of premieres, including 24, Human Target, White Collar, Burn Notice, and American Pickers. And if you want to see some really crazy numbers, click through and take a look at what iCarly did. Read the rest of this entry »
Supernatural – The monster is real

I really don’t understand what The CW was thinking when they decided a two month break in the middle of the season was a good idea. Surely they could have sprinkled a couple new episodes in there somewhere to keep things moving along. Or maybe they are playing the “absence makes the TV viewing mind grow fonder” game. It’s a little harder to argue with that one, because I was positively giddy waiting for a new Supernatural episode to finally be starting. However … if you’re going to go away for two months, you better come back big. And boy did they. Read the rest of this entry »
