USA Network characters: It’s our world … they just live in it
I think by now we’ve established the fact that USA Network knows how to cook a mean character. Each and every original series that the network’s produced is a hit on one scale or another — including Monk, which I otherwise can’t speak to because I don’t watch it.
Within the last week, I’ve enjoyed two episodes of Psych from last season (finally caught up!), as well as the pilot of White Collar (twice), the new and extremely exciting series that premiered last weekend. And the latter included commercials for the upcoming season of Burn Notice. All of which actually got me thinking that, if not for the atypical situation of my being behind on one series, and a new one premiering, I might be spending long stretches of time with no USA Network whatsoever.
Now I’ll grant you that that’s not so strange, considering that the major networks take summers off (well, used to … and still should, judging by their offerings), and that USA offers only a handful of original programming. But what about the fact that I want what I want? Read the rest of this entry »
Ratings Clack – Smallville continues to defy the odds

We do often get caught up in the big numbers from the big networks. It is, after all, hard to overlook the fact that NCIS is still growing its audience in the 7th season. There are still some very interesting stories happening on the little network, CW. When it was announced that Vampire Diaries would be paired with Supernatural, while Smallville was shuffled off to Friday, many people expected that was the end.
The show wouldn’t be able to come back from a year grinding away on Friday nights. After a few weeks looking at the numbers though, that’s not the case at all. Clark and the gang can celebrate good times, despite taking a hit from the move. In fact, this week Smallville topped new episodes of One Tree Hill, Gossip Girl, 90210, and Melrose Place. It’s far from done. Elsewhere, we had our first sizable crop of repeats this week, which brought some interesting results. Read the rest of this entry »
Five things I want more of from Psych when it returns

This is the time of year where other Psych fans like me say “awwwww no!” because we’ve come to the “fall finale” and have to wait for the show to return in January. Here are a few things I’ve liked about the show this season, all of which I’d really like to see more of:
More of Shawn’s dad … and his interactions with Shawn. I’ve always loved Corbin Bersen’s Henry Spencer, and it seems they brought him in much more this season than in the past. In fact, I believe we’ve gotten a flashback to the young Spencers to open every episode this season. Is it possible Henry will be back on the force — even just as a consultant — after this episode?
What happens when shows stop calling to you?
I find myself in an unexpected predicament these days. Or you could call it a perfect storm. But however you want to label it, I’m stuck.
The new fall season has taken me by surprise with a number of additions to the old TiVo season pass list. That on top of my shows that made it past the grim reaper last season, times cable series that tend to be good more often than network offerings … as a result, there are a couple of series that are stacking up on my DVR. Fast. Read the rest of this entry »
Quotation Marks – Special Weddings, Swimfan, and seminars

The week that NBC proved to everyone that they don’t care about hour long dramas anymore, they at least gave Jim/Pam ’shippers the moment they’d been waiting for, a very special Wedding on The Office. Matt Damon showed up on the Entourage finale, and got a good one in on Drama. And Glee proves that it is easily the most quotable show on television today.
The Office
“What are you doing?” — Oscar
“I’m trying to decide if I have time to pee.” — Kevin
“How long do you take to pee?” — Oscar
“The peeing is fast, Oscar. It’s getting my tie back on.” — Kevin
FlashForward
“I’m the CEO of the airline. All the executives are taking flights today, to prove to the customers that the skies are safe again.” — CEO
“How’s that working out for you?” — Zoey
“Gangbusters. Another scotch” — CEO
Poll: What chat / live-blogs would you attend here?
You may have noticed that we’ve had a few chat / live-blog posts here the past few weeks. We call them both a “chat” and a “live-blog” because the system we use, CoverItLive, is more of a live-blogging platform than a chat interface, but so far it’s worked very well for us.
The attendance for these chats have been hit or miss, so we’d like to get some feedback from you, the readers, as to what shows you’d like to see us post chats for. We can’t promise anything, but it helps us figure out where to concentrate our energies.
Quotation Marks – Singles, Snipers, and Zimas

We’re in the midst of it all now. This week the Emmy’s (un)officially kicked off the new fall season with an outstanding performance by host Neil Patrick Harris, Glee turned in a killer episode, and we saw the first cancellation of the season. One more week and most of the new fall shows will have premiered, and this post will be exploding with quotey-goodness.
Quotes from the Ether
“If you’re having trouble with somebody on the set, learn how to tell them to go to hell in such a way they’ll want to go.” – Emmy nominated director Rod Holcomb (ER), on how to handle troubles on the set
“After Miss Guided, Opportunity Knocks, Gameshow In My Head, and True Beauty, I thought someone taking another shot on one of his shows was him getting a break. Apparently, when Ashton grows up he wants to be Tim Minear.” – Clacker Brett Love, on the cancellation of The Beautiful Life Read the rest of this entry »
