Can shows truly put their heroes in danger?

The teaser of this week’s Lie to Me ended with the main character, Cal Lightman, seemingly shot dead. There’s been a buzz since the airing that, because there was never any doubt that by the time the end credits rolled the human lie detector would be back on his feet, the drama was all manufactured and, well, empty. Show runner Shawn Ryan has been fielding questions to that point on Twitter. The same sentiment can be found in the comments on Brett’s SG:U post. It begs the question: can television shows ever put their heroes in any realistic danger?
TV on DVD for October 27th

With most of the big sets out of the way, our DVD attention now turns toward the older shows. This week does offer a couple of current things from Battlestar Galactica, Adult Swim, and The Secret Saturdays. The real gems, however, come from years gone by. My pick for the week would be the new Collector’s Edition of The Prisoner, but I already have the 40th Anniversary set. If you also find that particular collection checked off on your DVD to-do list, you may be interested in the various selections in the Monty Python section.

Battlestar Galactica: The Plan – CliqueClack Preview

It’s been about seven months since we’ve seen a new episode of Battlestar Galactica. Sound like a long time? Well, actually, that’s about the same amount of time we had to wait to see the second half of the fourth season after the first half aired, so for BSG fans, this isn’t new. I’m talking, of course, about the upcoming direct-to-DVD (and online video) release of Battlestar Galactica: The Plan.
An official copy of the DVD arrived on my doorstep yesterday, and despite having a buttload of TV to watch, I couldn’t wait to give it a watch. So, here’s an early review of the movie with little to no spoilers, which is an easy task since there’s really nothing shocking or spoiler-worthy to worry about.
Quotation Marks – Exorcisms, Ann Margret, and … a Gilmore Girl?

Was it just me, or did this week seem a little off? Despite being funny, Psych put me to sleep (literally, not figuratively) with its not-so-interesting plot. Leverage was hilarious, but didn’t offer nearly as many good one-liners as it normally does. And depressingly, Bob’s Veronica Mars Virgin Diary is quickly coming to a close (which, I’ve got to warn you, means more Buffy quotes for everyone — I love shows that bring the wit). Alas, however, the Fall Season quickly approaches. Read the rest of this entry »
The Week in Clack – RIP Ted Kennedy

Michael Jackson’s still making news, this time ensuring that his death was a tragedy. The official report out of the LA coroner’s office was that Jackson’s death was a homicide, brought on by the mixture of drugs he was being prescribed for his sleep disorder. So he very well may not have been too frail for those London concerts … but we’ll never know.
- In related news, A&E is going forward with the Jackson family reality show. Exploitation or honor? You decide!
- The passing of Ted Kennedy brought all kinds of specials honoring this last of the dynasty. Read the rest of this entry »
Diary of a Battlestar Galactica Virgin – The piano man

The rebellion was squashed. Ellen and Boomer made a grandiose return. Saul lost his lil’ Cylon baby. Those were the highlights of my last diary entry. Now, I’m nearing the end of this long and winding cherry-popping experience. Ronny Moore is running out of chapters to succinctly wrap up his epic tale of humanity’s last parade. There are plenty of loose ends to tie and vexing questions to answer. Will it all make sense? Probably not. Will I be satisfied? Uh … my fingers are crossed, but I’m feeling some bad vibes in the air.
Quotation Marks – Brett really DOES watch Project Runway

Project Runway: All-Star Challenge
[You'll have to work with me on this one, but it's easily the quote of the week]
“When I see boobs going all over the place I get dizzy.” — Heidi [not liking that one of the models, who was wearing a really tight t-shirt, wasn't wearing a bra]
“Me too!” — our very own Brett Love watching at home
