How I Met Your Mother Cast Looking into Coffin

Yesterday, I looked at the five new shows that I’m most looking forward to this season. It’s a pretty short list, unfortunately. Heck, I only had one on the “Honorable Mention” list. Thankfully, there’s quite a bit of good stuff returning to the network schedule this season. I could, however, come up with just as long of a list of stuff that I wish was coming back that’s not. I should, as Brett has been known to tell me, “shut up and quit my whining” (my words, not his).

First, a cheat. I know I said that this was about the upcoming TV season, but we cover Web Shows here on the ‘Clack, so I’m taking a (very appropriate) liberty. The third season of The Guild started this week (or last week, if you’re an Xbox Live Gold Member), and I can’t wait. I only found The Guild after Dr. Horrible introduced me to Felicia Day, but I’m glad that I did, as it’s one of the most consistently funny things out there on any medium. The addition of CliqueClack favorite (and my hero as a kid) Wil Wheaton to the cast is only going to ramp things up for the third installment. If you haven’t seen it, head to www.watchtheguild.com right away.

a-teamThere doesn’t appear to be a short supply of TV series being adapted for the big screen. After perusing Variety’s list of projects in development, it’s easy to conclude the small screen is having a powerful influence on its big brother. Not all of these adaptations will will make it beyond the brainstorming stage, but a few are on the fast track.

For example, The A-Team has attached Director Joe Carnahan (Narc) and actors Bradley Cooper (The Hangover) and Liam Neeson. It’s slated to be released in 2010, if you believe IMDB. I wonder if they’ll actually kill anyone in the film version? I never knew – until watching the series – people could survive helicopters crashing into the sides of mountains with such regularity. The ’80s: when bad guys were really tough.

Just like that, the 2008-2009 season is done. We are now firmly in the grips of the summer television season. That means there will be a months long wait (10 if you’re a Chuck fan!) for new episodes. On the bright side, you’ll have plenty of time to watch the Women’s College World Series (Danielle Lawrie is awesome!) or the French Open (I’ve got Nadal and Safina). Or maybe you’ll join me in reading World War Z (Zombies!). Before you get started on that fancy new summer schedule, we have one last week of numbers to take a look at. Read the rest of this entry »

I recently watched the movie Taken, and it made me realize what I’ve been missing in 24 this season. In Taken, Liam Neeson plays Bryan Mills, a guy whose daughter is kidnapped while on a trip to Europe, with the intention of being sold into slavery.

Mills, a former spy, goes all Jack Bauer to get his daughter back, tracking down the bad guys and making them pay — sometimes with their lives. Only this was the Jack Bauer of the early seasons of 24, a vulnerable guy when it comes to his family, but one who takes no prisoners and will do whatever it takes to make things right.

Ratings Clack – Finale bonanza

The 2008-2009 television season is quickly coming to a close. Last week saw some 30 season/series finales hitting our screens. The resulting numbers were all over the place. Some shows took advantage of the situation, pulling out all the stops and hitting numbers they hadn’t seen in some time. Others held steady. And a few signed in with troubling drops.

I’ve mentioned before that these final numbers could hold sway as the networks prepare to release the fall schedules this week. That does still apply, although, after all the shenanigans over the weekend, with Dollhouse and Better Off Ted being renewed, just how much sway becomes a little more cloudy. 24_042009I’ve been grousing all season that we really don’t have a good enough reason for Tony to have turned so heavily to the dark side. Yes, we know his wife was killed as a result of both of their professions. Maybe not directly, but she wouldn’t have been killed had it not been for their jobs and involvement with Jack Bauer and CTU.

So when Jack pummeled Tony (my favorite scene) in last night’s ep and said, “Why did you betray me?” that’s exactly the question I want answered, too. A while back, Chloe said something to the same effect: “I know Michelle was killed, but….”

We’re on the verge of it now. Over the next two weeks all of our favorite shows are going to be ending, and some of those tough decisions will have to be made by the networks. These final few ratings numbers will play heavily in those decisions. With that in mind, the week brought good news for a couple of bubble shows (Castle, Lie To Me), and bad news for others (Better Off Ted, Cupid, The Unusuals, Dollhouse, Reaper, My Name Is Earl).
